I got a 29 on my MCAT. I will be retaking the test, but also want to make some money (in this poor economy, GET ME SOME EXTRA DOUGH). I know my score is not that cool (why Im retaking).

What standards do TPR/Kaplan require (section breakdown) for a potential tutor?

If I remember correctly Kaplan requires over a 90th percentile in each subsection

+1

Also, they make you jump through a lot of hoops so I would recommend tutoring freelance or joining a smaller company. It's a lot less work in terms of prep time and the pay is usually higher.

Do you have any suggestions with regard to smaller MCAT tutoring companies?

Craigslist. Just search tutoring. I found two opportunities this way...one paid $40 an hour and the other $30 an hour. Kaplan offered something in the $20s and from what I could tell, it required a lot of work on my end as an instructor.

oh that sucks. I mean I heard the pay is like $18 per hour. Getting this job would be a good consolation prize other than getting a good MCAT score. Im motivated even more.

thanks, I will see if my current score can get me any of those jobs. You must have got a decent MCAT score at the time you got those jobs, right?

PR is fairly easy, I believe you're allowed to teach any subject you scored higher than a 12 on, and then you have to take a subject certification test and give a sample lesson to be hired. I highly doubt you will be considered with a 29 though, sorry to bust your bubble. Probably better for you to tutor high school or college kids on bio or chem

I was at~95% or slightly above. I don't think they'll consider you unless you have at least a 10 on each subsection.

lol thats ok

I remember seeing a poster one time at my undergrad and for the MCAT and all it said in bold letters was PROVEN PROFICIENCY IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY! But that was around 3 years ago sooo..

I wouldn't worry about it, it is simple to teach since it is all run through them, but the pay is terrible like ~$20ish an hour for teaching time, and like ~$10 an hour for prep time up to amount of teaching time max. I'm not sure about your university or surrounding high schools, but I constantly saw people requesting tutors for subjects paying $40-80/hr for a lot less work. And depending on the subject you tutor, you can still count that as decent prep for your retest.
