I am an INTP and I am wondering what types other people are. Not sure if I should even be going into medicine as the recommended career lists for my type do not suggest anything other than neurology.

Here's the test if you're not sure.

Interesting test. My category is ENFJ, the teacher/pedagogue. I DO do a lot of teaching. I didn't see where it said what careers were best for your type though.

Ditto. However, I'd like someone else to take the test for me based on their impressions of me. And questions like "understanding new theoretical concepts" are nonsense. If you are a philosopher you wouldn't understand 100% string theory. You may feel some degree, but I don't like the way most questions were asked.

Hell, I hate personality tests. But hey, I took one, dang you boredom!

check out this site for some good explanations with lists of jobs associated with each MB type (search for physician to see what they say fits)

http://www.sac.edu/students/admissions/placement_testing/mbtitype.htm

When I look at that site, I don't think that it describes me very well at all like the original site does. Plus it has just about every possible career choice for me from coal miner to physician. :meanie: 🙄

I forgot to say before that the last time I took this test, I was an INTJ (mastermind). So whoever asked if they had the wrong personality type to be a physician, these personality types are not static and fixed anyway. If you think you're too introverted to be a physician, you can change that.

I am an INFP, which is a "healer-idealist".

Wow... I'm INTJ. Not surprised to see quite a few of those here.

I'm an ESFJ, the provider guardian. I actually thought both sites described me quite well. My #1 job on the other website listed: Medical secretary 😱

ha ha! i remember that exam! all three times i took it throughout my education, i was INFJ. with one assessment i did in a middle school course the "results" of the MB-personal inventory included a list of recommended careers. most of my other friends were offered an extensive list of exotic and highly desirable careers... but alas, according to the meyer's-briggs verson i took, i was fated to be a RARE DOCUMENT RESTORER... good thing nobody really pays any heed to such advice!

...although, looking at the career list provided in the link above, it's pretty uncanny that i have considered most of the top 12 suggested careers for INFJs... he he, recommendation number 8 is "physician: pathology..." nah, i'd much rather shoot for number 5: the "Certified Psycho-dramatist". LMAO.

intj...i love it

Cool! I'm an ENFJ as well. It's funny, because I am a chemist by BS, and also doing a PhD, and I did do a lot of teaching - not that those are the only things that define the type, but we do have something in common 🙂

I scored as an "inspector," ISTJ. Whike I am a bit "judging," this is totally off:

These quiet, no-nonsense Guardians have a distaste for and distrust of fanciness in speech, dress, and living space. Their words tend to be simple and down-to-earth, not showy or high-flown; their clothes are often homespun and conservative rather than of the latest fashion; and their home and work environments are usually neat, orderly, and traditional, rather than up-to-date or luxurious. In their choice of personal property (cars, furnishings, jewelry, and so on) price and durability are just as important as comfort or appearance.

I am, by far, the most decadent and self-indulgent person I know.

eta: And I don't think my personality is comparable to that of Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh...

There are SO MANY heartless NT's here! OMG I hate NT's! No wonder I hate so many people on this site. It all makes sense now. I sure hope most docs aren't NT's. They seem to be totally incapable of human emotion.

Mohandas Gandhi and Eleanor Roosevelt are examples of the Counselor Idealist (INfJ) 🙂

Hey hey! I'm an INTJ, but only a +1 on the T. Which means I am almost perfectly BOTH T and F...(or neither). A thinker and a feeler...a lover and a fighter...hey baby...wanna make out?

No but seriously. Since the #1 and #2 most common are INTJ and INFJ, umm...Idunno. That's cool because I'm right in the middle.

Wow. You think it's bad that I'm working on a major research paper on a very obscure subject right now that is due tomorrow afternoon and I can't seem to string two coherent thoughts together?

Yay for INFJs!

INFP 😀 👍 👍

In my experience, the MBTI has a good ability to single out certain personality traits and tendancies, but absolutely sucks at giving a good picture of job prospects. The simple truth is the #1 reason 95% of people find themselves in a particular job is anything but "because they had a good temperament for it." It's really only a very recent phenomenon that people have had a great deal of flexibility in what career they pursue--especially in generations past, people worked in particular jobs because their parents did, or the industry was abundant in their community, or they had kids and suddenly needed to secure income regularly, or it was a big trend in the time and place when they were going to school, etc. But how many people are there that started in law school then tried mad school, then worked as a high school teacher for a bit, and finally decided that constructionwas best for them? It doesn't happen. Nobody (at least, not a significant sample of people for developing a test like this) spends enough time trying out different career ideas, and sees each trial thorugh to a point where they can really get a good sense of what they think of the actual job environment. If you go to law school, you're probably never going to be an airline pilot, and at the time you make the decision to go to either flight school or law school, you probably lack a real thorough understanding of what the respective careers are like.

I took the Myers Briggs in a one-unit summer course called "Career Search" back in the day. They also gave a test called the STRONG indicator. The STRONG was vocation specific, and asked very specific questions about what particular interests you have. That works a bit better for vocation searching, because the people who actually do go to professional schools likely do have a very distinct and strong set of interests. So for me, with a large number of interests, I came back with my top six careers all being in the range of "very strong interest" (physician, lawyer, politician, college professor, psychologist, and engineer, not necessarily in that order). But the person next to me had their top six with three "moderate interests" and three "below average interests". People are like that--some are highly interested in many thing, and some couldn't give a rat's ass about anything.

I work in a tedious job, and when the work is tedious, I like to talk with my coworkers. This means that sometimes I find myself rambling because the other one doesn't feel like talking, so my natural inclination is to try to make them talk so that I'm not just chattering away. So I ask things like "what kind of movies do you like?" and "what kind of music do you listen to?" etc. Just today, I found myself with a complete non-talker--no answers to any questions at all. So I tried the Office Space question of "what would you do if you had a million dollars?" "Retire." "What would you do in retirement?" "I don't know, I wouldn't have to do anything." "How would you spend the time?" "I don't know, travel?" "Where would you travel?" "Gee I don't know... what's out there?"

The point is, a person like this is unlikely to find any job that they'll really love or that really gets them excited, because they clearly aren't excited by much. But they necessarily fit into one of the 16 Myers-Briggs temperaments. And people like this likely exist in every category, but if you have no passion, then no job will ever make you passionate. However, I do think that you'd find that people without strong interests are clustered in boring or menial jobs--so a test that focuses on interest can highlight the differences between people in this regard. Myers Briggs can't do it.

I am ENTP. 😀
I love Briggs-Myer.
Cool poll!

It's kind of strange that the poll is showing post people being Is. I always thought docs would be more extroverted.

I have to laugh about what getunconcsious said about nts being heartless. One of my friends jokingly calls me "a hearless bastard" because I do pretty much decide everything based on rational analysis. I even have a complicated cost/benefits analysis worked up for dealing with boyfriends. When the costs outweigh the benefits, you know, it's time for him to go.

Docs are extroverted, but internet forum users are introverted.

haha! thats what i got too! i thought they both described me well, but was kind of unimpressed by my job listing... 1) medical secretary 2) hairdresser 22) nun 96) coal miner

INTJ - Big surprise

The vocational assessment I took years ago said scientist, doctor, science teacher. I think there's a pattern

I am ENTP.

Myers-Briggs kinda sucks though, as Jungian functions are jumbled for introverted types in that system. Socionics is a better model that gets it right (www.socionics.com)... If limiting the human population to 16 personality types is indeed the way to go...

Interesting. Before I had my kids, I was an INTJ. Now I'm an ENTJ.

Probably not. Types, by their definition, do not change over a lifetime. Your type corresponds to how you process and gain information; therefore, you just picked up some extraverted traits along the way. Also, tests are a bad way to discover your type. They are a good place to start, but one must probe a little deeper and read profiles and stuff.

i'm ENFP. so i can join such great ENFPs as Andy Kaufman, Robin Williams and......Regis Philbin. riiiiight.........
where does it say what jobs are good for you?

it said we're 3% of the general population, so far it's holding true!

End of 4th year. And I am sooooo tired! I can't wait to finish. Are you done with yours?

INTJ!!

psst: we're the smart ones.

:meanie:

Where are the other guardians (SJ's)? NT's think they're the smartest but we're the most socially skilled. It so follows that totally un-sociable types like INTJ are the most common on this board.

ENTP 😎

And getunconcsious, NTs are the coolest people in the world. With NTs you don't have to deal with all the emotional crap other types suck you into and they're always fun to hang out with, rather than being fun one day and emo the next. 😛

ISFJ and proud of it. Nowhere near artistic, though!

The ISFJ personality is characterized above all by a desire to serve others. ISFJs are warm, kindhearted individuals who bring an aura of quiet warmth, caring, and dependability to all that they do. They are hard-working and conscientious individuals prone to be quiet and serious. ISFJs tend to choose careers in which they can use their exceptional people-observation skills to determine what people want or need and then use their exceptional organizational abilities to create a structured plan to fulfill the need. Their excellent sense of space and function combined with their awareness of aesthetic quality also gives them special abilities in practical artistic endeavors such as interior and fashion design.

I'm planning to start writing in about six months and defend in early spring. I'm pretty ready to finish, too. 😛 What kind of chemistry are you studying? I'm doing bioorganic.

oops! I missed your post earlier. Yeah, I think it's pretty funny that they has us extroverts for solitary jobs like coal mining. But then again, I think just about every possible career was listed.
