I was fortunate enough to hear back from KCUMB that I got accepted. Since it is my #1 choice, I declined interviews everywhere else. Now, I'm wondering what I could & should be doing in preparation for medical school. I have a few thoughts, but I wanted to hear what the rest of you are going to be doing. (Vacation? Start skipping class? Buying medical texts for an early start? Etc.)

Just relax. Vacation would be good. Just make sure you don't slack too much...

lots of TV......................DONT try to learn anything for school. Earn some cash too

Travel to exotic lands, learn to scuba dive, do whatever it is you would have done if you werent pre-med.. etc...

Yes, enjoy yourself. If you get totally bored go study abroad (Med. spanish or something).

I am finishing up my Master's and I wished I had the time to just relax!

P.s. Let me know what you thought about KCUMB. I am interviewing there soon.😛

Anything BUT medical school stuff. That being said, start packing crap now. Look for apartments. Take your time to look around the KCUMB area for good places to live, bad places to live, good places to go shopping, etc. Look at getting your life in shape WAAAY before you think you need to. Well prepared in every way that's NOT NOT NOT medical related will ease lots of angst later. Nothin' worse than trying to figure out where the best, cheapest produce is when you have nothing in your apartment and 2800 hours of reading/studying to get done for tomorrow. Find the laundromats. Find the good cheap places to eat. Find a good mechanic for your car. Find a physician. Get your medical records up to date. Just get your OTHER life stuff in order.

And, I repeat, DO NOTHING RELATED TO MEDICAl SCHOOL STUDYING. NOTHING. Do NOT skip classes your senior year, tho - a bad grade (or even worse, failing grade) can make a med school rescind an acceptance. Just be happy. Man, when med school starts you're gonna be so far under water you can't even see the sunlight on the surface. Enjoy your life now. 🙂

Secure old scribe notes (if available) back exams and find out what your first classes will be.

Then take a vacation and schedule to do some intro studying (maybe anat, biochem, physio depending on your school) about a week or 2 before school starts.

The head start will be sweet and will make your life easier.

😎

uh, no. any studying you do, will be bypassed by week 2 of school.

what do you mean bypassed?

if you mean that by the time second week comes you will already be behind regardless of any pre-matric studying, then I beg to differ.

When I went to DMU was told that playing video games does wonders for your dexterity, especially if you want to be a surgeon so if I get my acceptance I am planning on playing video games all day long for months.
If you want to be a good surgeon make sure you brush up on your GTA III skills.
Good luck and relax, mission accomplished.
Congrats by the way

If you have not had biochem, immunology, or genetics yet I would suggest that if you have the time to take one or all of them. I am one of the few at my school that has not had any of them and I wish now that I had. Life is much easier for those that had it before. You have a lot of time before schools starts for you so take a little time to take one of those courses and then the 3-4 months before schools starts do nothing but have fun.

enjoy your last year 🙂 i wouldn't go buy the medical texts just yet..but stay connected somehow to the healthcare field so you don't feel so out of touch when it comes time to start school. Try and work and save up some money for med school and trips that you wanted to do. right now, i'm working as a pathology transcriber and then going to eurorpe next summer with some friends. my job is teaching me to be familiar with the terminology and sometimes i get to see an autopsy here and there. i'm just looking forward to visiting friends over the next year and taking that trip to europe for a month 🙂 have fun!

I'd enjoy the year.. but I'm also trying to get a jump start on memorizing the human anatomy.

All I did was buy the Anatomy Coloring Book by Kapit and Elson, it's actually real useful and makes learning fun.. ?

Take a day off and just sleep now that the process is over. (esp since you won't be getting a whole ton of this in med school)

Save up $$$.

I like the videogame idea.

Look for places to live.

And don't bother studying now.

if you get accepted into a program do they require you to complete the one you are currently in. i should have my masters finished in may. but if for some reason my research is not done could i just quit the program and start med school? also do the schools look at your grades before you matriculate. say your grades dropped in the spring b/c you slacked after getting accepted will the schools retract your acceptance?

what do you mean bypassed?

if you mean that by the time second week comes you will already be behind regardless of any pre-matric studying, then I beg to differ.

thats precisely what I meant. Beg to differ all you want. You are in the minority.

Since you are going to KCUMB I can give you a little bit of advice. The first section is called "Foundations of Medicine" and it is a review from biochem, physio, immuno, path, pharm, etc. There is no anatomy during this 6 week section, but Musculo-Skeletal is the next section after FOM. I would suggest reading up on any general area in which you may feel weak. Sure, you'll pass the limits of what you previously knew pretty quick, but having a stronger foundation to build from is never a bad thing.

For me, I was lacking a bit in immunology, so this is what I read. I think it was worth it when those lectures came around. Another suggestion might be to brush up on microbiology. They drop a micro-bomb about 3 weeks into the course and you have to memorize a ton of bacteria, viruses and fungi. In the end, if you're not burned out on getting this far, then sure, maybe read some more. If you are burned out, then rest up, because you have plently of time to become burned out in the next few years...

I can't recall the last time minority was equivalent with inaccuracy. So yes I will differ all I want. Thanks 😎

Another vote for doing jack-$hit before you start med school...don't take a minute of your free time for granted..... I did next to nothing academicly oriented after I got my acceptance at my top choice...that included my entire last semester of college.....just relaxed and gave my liver a workout..

Which school did you say you went to?

Additonally, that was three imperative sentences. Im not sure how you made the connection that I somehow meant inaccuracy and minority were equivalent. Enlighten me.

Eh, I just read some of your posts. You are on our side. I retire from the unnecessary ball busting in this case.

I have a serious question...Why did you withdraw all your interviews? I realize KCUMB was your "#1" choice, but have you even visted other schools? I could totally understand if you got accepted into say Johns Hopkins or Harvard, but KCUMB is clearly not any of those. I just think you are doing yourself a disservice by not visiting other places that you may find you like a lot more.

Congrats on getting accepted though & I in no way mean to 'rain on your parade.' I just would like to encourage others to visit more places than your preconceived #1 b/c many, many people find that they like some places better once they visit/interview. What a couple hundred dollars to travel somewhere when you are going to be spending 150K on medical school?? Not even a drop in the bucket.

I would tend to agree, but if I was in the same position as those already accepted, I'd probably do the same thing. I've visited KCUMB, it's the perfect location for me, and if I get the opportunity to end the process early by getting accepted there, I'll likely drop the rest.

I don't see the point in spending money and wasting time going elsewhere if you know that's where you want to go. I'm sure these folks have their reasons.
