Last year I applied more broadly and had no luck. This year I want to leave out reach schools and just go for the ones I have the best shot at and would really want to attend. So far I have submitted my AMCAS to the following schools:

Rosalind Franklin
UIC
Rush
Loyola

I am an IL resident, a little over a 3.5 GPA and a 10V 9P 10B P MCAT. I have 3 months research in a food lab (not exactly clinical/medically related). Volunteer work at a hospital, traveled to south africa for volunteer/medical seminars, tutor for conversational english, study abroad in spain (more or less fluent in spanish). I want to stay in the midwest and want to add two more schools to the list, any suggestions?

Which do you want more? Stay in midwest, or go to medical school? You have stats close to the average matriculant, but the average applicant applys to 15 schools. I hear there's lots of great schools in the midwest, so broaden your scope beyond 6 schools, and beyond just IL.

Thank you for your response, but it didnt exactly answer my question. Yes I understand that my numbers are average and that the average applicant applies to a large number of schools. I am not trying to limit myself just thinking realistically. Last year I applied to 12 schools including some reach schools. I do not want to do that this year. I also applied to schools in NY which realistically I would not be happy at. I could see myself in other regions but the specific states (ie Washington) tend to not admit many out of staters.

Only a fracton of the incoming class of nearly all state-supported schools will be out-of-staters. These schools give 80, 90% of their seats to state residents as a condition of taking state money, so don't apply to any state school outside of your own.

So look at private schools. They don't take state money, so while they may get a lot of applications - 6k, 7k, maybe up to 10k/yr - at all applicants will be seen equally (no in-state, out-of-state). So get a MSAR, or look at the AAMC site, and find a bunch of private schools. Apply to those.

From your stats, the only thing holding you back is getting a sufficient number of applications on your side.

I'd add all Ohio schools except Case.

Ohio has way more med schools than most other places its size, and I know at least three of of its six state-supported schools have a high percentage of out of staters-you can look up stats yourself. The list:
Ohio University (DO)
Ohio State
U of Cincinnati
NEOUCOM (doesn't admit many, BUT the year I interviewed there, the dean admitted that they were interviewing 90 applicants for 40 spots, aka very good odds)
Wright State (looks for primary care type people)
MUO (or MCO, they changed their name)-anyway the one in Toledo
Case (far reach with your stats, plus overpriced)

You just have to look up stats for each place-check number of out of staters admitted in the last few years, then look for "undesirable" states. I don't want to name names for fear of offense, but look for states whose main export is corn/cows or which have a reputation for high rates consanguinuity, deserved or not.
