Best can mean whatever you want it to mean, but I guess I'm interested in both which have the highest impact and which ones seem to be most useful when you want to learn about a topic. thanks for any opinions.

thanks. i usually search, but didn't think this would have been discussed recently. anyway, that thread didn't generate much interest. maybe we could try again here..

I don't remember what the other thread said. AJSP is probably the most respected for surg path issues. Human Path is a bit more marginal but still respected. Modern Path is the USCAP journal and is getting (it seems) more prominent. Archives is important but less groundbreaking stuff in there.

Many important papers are published in other journals related to specialties (like Urology journals, derm journals, orthopedic journals, whatever).

Some subspecialties have their own journals - like J Cutaneous Pathology. Heme articles are likely to be published anywhere, I pity hemepath people for that.

thanks a lot yaah. thats just what i was looking for.

If you are considering imapct factor the most prominent pathology journals are American Journal of Pathology and Laboratory Investigation.

Actually, the Journal of Pathology recently jumped past AJP in terms of IF.

AJP got a 6.4 in 2004 and JP has a 6.21.

I have not read the Journal of Pathology much it looks pretty good. I guess its a British journal.

Kind of like what Lancet is to NEJM. Maybe someday we'll have a Path journal break the 10 IF mark.....
Who knows.

That was true in 2004, but Journal of Pathology is now #1 -

If an IF difference is less than 1.0 (6.4 vs. 6.1), is it really meaningful? Especially when journals like Cell, Science, Nature, NEJM have IF's greater than 25.

Who knows how these things work or what they really mean....

Here is an older IF listing just to see some of the differences in numbers.

My sentiments exactly.

I agree. I just wanted to point out that Journal of Pathology is a player.

That would be baller, not player (see Dave Chappelle's MTV Cribs skit from this season). By the way, did anyone see the Cribs with Lil' Jon? That one guy was drinking kool aid out of a fu(king plastic gallon gasoline can.

I hear ya bro.

IF and citation index are increasingly becoming the measure of the value of a publication.

Many departments are requiring their faculty to publish in journals with a minimum IF.
