Does academic probation qualify as an institutional action? I called my school to ask and a student worker informed me that it doesn't, but I just wanted to make sure since I know of some students who did report academic probation as an institutional action. Isn't institutional action more like if a student is caught cheating or plagiarizing?

I am also wondering the same... My girlfriend came to my dorm unescorted and I was written up.... but, that is all that happened; no probation, etc... just a paper saying i shouldnt let that happen again.. what kind of bull**** is that?

i think its a judgement call. its just probation, you werent actually kicked out. i wouldn't mention probation -- just one mans opinion.

but it also says that if we're not certain we should contact our school. that is what i did. maybe i'll have to call the school again and this time speak to a registrar person.

But institutional action isn't about getting kicked out.

I think it's important to be honest in your application. It's not fair to lie, especially when everyone is held to the same strict standard. Any time a poor academic performance warrants a probation, that is certainly an institutional action, and it should be reported as such. It won't hurt your chances if you explain it well, but if you don't report it and your med school finds out, you can get kicked out!

Why would we be lying? I was told last year by my school not to put it because it's just a warning, not an action taken.

the best thing to do what you were proposing, by talking to your undergraduate school. see if what you had qualifies strictly as "institutional action" or can instead be called something 'nicer'.

also, im not sure if there exists a strict definition of "institutional action" on the amcas website, you might want to check that out.

do you have any lawyer friends or relatives, perhaps an obudsman at your school? seek their advice.

I called my school and spoke with the head counselor. She says academic probation IS NOT institutional action. Academic probation is not an official action that the school takes, just a warning for the students so they can do better. I also found out I was never on academic probation, so problem solved.

You mean being put on probation isn't an action? At my ugad institution, it was a very serious matter to be put on academic probation.

Every school is different and has different policies. Always good to check with your school first.
