I like to do art in my free time and was thinking of learning about medical illustration. I don't know very much about the field and I assume it wouldn't count as a clinical experience, but I'm not sure what type of activity it would be classified as, if anything. I've heard there is a certification involved during my brief research into it so far, and I was wondering if anyone had more specific information on this? I'm self-taught so I'm not sure what would be a good way to get into this/prepare for an exam, but I thought it would be a fun way to demonstrate my passion for medicine and art.

We look for people to show their passion for Medicine by actively engaging in something clinical.

Not everything has to be a medicine. If you're passionators are that is perfectly okay to do whatever the subject. Somebody who is a former watercolorist, I would very much appreciate you are telling me that you like medical illustration as a hobby.

Make an AMCAS account and you can play with the Work and Activities section. This would fall under Artistic Endeavor.

The only thing medical schools really require is showing you're good with patients and you're pursuing medicine for the right reasons. Beyond that, it's completely open-ended it helps to focus on what makes you unique. Medical school application is kind of an art when you think about it because of how competitive it is so your application needs a bit of an artistic (not literal art) touch to make it stand out: whether it be a super unique activity, life experience, etc. But it is art in the fact it will integrate into your personal statement in a meaningful manner that makes you stand out.

Included in the current Becoming a Student Doctor course, an example from pharmacy (because there are many examples from medicine):

Did you do any field drawings, like of wildlife, birds, etc.? Didn't you do this in an intro bio/ecology class? (Maybe/not?)

Have you ever put your artwork up for a juried exhibit (won a prize, got a piece of work shown, sold anything)?

Repeating from someone else: there should be "artistic endeavor" or "hobby" as a W/A category...

I think being an artist can really help you on interview. It helps abate the feeling of existential dread when you're asked to talk about yourself and you realize your entire existence has coalesced around getting into medical school and you haven't experienced guiltless "free time" in several years.

Have you heard of the guy that played the guitar for his interviewer? It's all over TT.

Anyway, here's Wonderwall.

As long as it wasn't...

... and this is why we have PREview ...

(I feel 99% that the post was currying sympathy and clicks. This cannot be real, and I've had candidates present their artwork to me for dental school interviews.)

Everyone already touched on most of your questions but I actually talked about scientific illustration in my w/a and it was brought up in 2 of my interviews so far!! 🙂 However, unless you're interested in doing it for personal enrichment, I don't think it's worth investing time/effort just to make your hobbies look more unique. Hobbies are there to showcase who you are, so if you already do art and love it then that's great too!
