What rating do you usually find acceptable on ratemyprofessors?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Usually I just follow the smiley. If it is the yellow happy smiley, it reflects a good teacher. However I also read the reviews themselves to see what they have to say, because sometimes bad reviews are for some lame reasons. I also make sure there are multiple reviews because one bad review from a student with a grudge against the teacher tells me absolutely nothing.

Exactly. It's important for folks to remember that ratemyprofessor is based on *subjective* experience, not objective data. I have students who failed due to their own incompetence, e.g., not doing the reading, skipping a lot of lectures, walking in on the day of the midterm asking when the test will be, etc. and then blaming *me* for their poor performance. It would be a lot funnier if other students didn't think that these were accurate reviews. 😉

^yea i definitely agree. i love reading the reviews after taking a class knowing that that person just didnt put the work in

I tend to believe only two types of people post on ratemyprofessor.com.

(1) People who really enjoyed the professor and/or usually did well in class

(2) People who really disliked the professor and/o did poorly in class.

Therefore, inherently you're going to get very bimodal reviews representing the two extremes. That being said however, I do admit to looking at ratemyprofessor.com when selecting classes, especially in grad school when I did not initially know anyone to get some first hand advice. During 4 years of Undergrad and 2 years of Grad school only ONCE did I find that my own experience ran contrary to the general sentiment expressed for a given professor on ratemyprofessor.com.

Remember that communications and underwater basket weaving majors are making some of these ratings...
