In the MD vs DO debate the only somewhat general consensus I hear is that it is hard for DO graduates to get a competitive residency. I've been looking through match lists which seem to confirm this.

Obviously being at the top of your class and doing well on boards influence this but what else can be done to increase ones chances. I will, hopefully, be going the DO route and just want to make sure I don't end up in some crappy suburb hospital.

Also how is looking through a couple of match list's conforming anything? Match lists tell nothing of what the people really wanted to go into. For example, in one class, maybe 130 people wanted to go into IM and FM and they all got their #1 choice. And only 10 people wanted to do surgery. You may see a school that has 130 FM/IM and 10 Surgery matches and might thing s*it that's a bad match list when in fact its not at all because everyone got into what they wanted to. Don't base anything off match lists. THEY TELL YOU NOTHING

This SAME question is literally asked about once a week. Please do a search.

I may have literally seen this same questions asked and answered at least a thousand times.

Chances are, you probably won't be going into MD neurosurgery, MD derm, or MD Ortho.

First, I'm not sure which match lists you are looking at because the ones I've seen have some pretty darned good matches going on.

Second, you have a 2.51 GPA and haven't even taken the MCAT yet. I don't care what your practice scores are, the real thing tends to bring a lot of surprises to people. You are putting the cart way before the horse. You're gonna need to work like hell to even get accepted to any medical school at all first.

I don't like being the bearer of bad news.... but you've got to look a little realistically at this thing. Getting a spot in medical school has become sooooo competitive that you need to focus on your GPA right now. You can worry about "competitive" residencies some other time.

Competitive residencies are 'competitive'. MD or DO. So you will have to work like hell in an MD program just like you would in a DO program. They are competitive in both arenas. And yes, this question has been answered thousands of times on SDN.
