I think this would be a cool idea to get some posts from people to see where they think they will be now and what really happens in the future. Think of it as a time capsule or a study of how things change. It is probably more useful for us low life MS0's that have no idea what anything is about (but everyone is welcome).

Here is how it works.

I think I will probably end up in either of the following depending on if I become an A55hole or not.

Nice guy: Emergency Medicine.
A55hole (or I turn out to have wonderful hands): General Surgery w/ a fellowship in surgical critical care.

Knowing my luck, someone has probably already done this thread, but whatever. I can't wait till four years cross by and see that in reality I turn out to be a pathologist or something like that.

oh, and if you wanna elaborate why you chose what you chose, that would be even cooler. I might add mine in a bit.

Interesting Idea!

I think that I'll end up in derm or internal med. Gee...that sounds so presumptuous!

I like internal medicine because part of me would like to be a Jack of all trades. I would love to know something about everything in medicine.

However, I also would like to be an expert. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so the idea of trying to master a (relatively) contained body of knowledge is also appealing. I've always been fascinated by skin. Part of it probably stems from being a girl =). Our skin also has such a huge psychological/sociological impact on us in addition to its physiological/immunological functions.

Continue to generally like people: Neurology or Internal Med (with an eye toward Onc or ID)
Begin to hate human contact: Pathology

.

I too consider myself a jack of all trades-type of person and would go for internal medicine.

Considering my background in microbiology, there a very good chance that i will go on to do ID

I am so interested in everything it is hard, but something in the back of my mind knows that I'll end up going the same path as my dad. (Radiology)

Neurosurgery is at the top for me. The following quote from Dr. Vertosick sums up my reasoning nicely.

"Physicists might distill Creation into a few differential equations and biologists see life's wonders in a DNA helix. Only the neurosurgeon actually touches the fleshy incarnation of Nature's greatest mystery: the human mind."

Hopefully anesthesiology. Gas men/women unite!

I also like IM: Gastroenterology. I'd be happy with either of those

General surgery and then a CT surgery fellowship. It has been my goal for more than twenty years, it is my calling.

If I was going to bet, most likely Emergency Medicine. Possibly anesthesia.

If I was going based purely on the clinical medicine that I thought I would find most interesting/rewarding it would be Ortho. I think that the reality of practicing medicine and my non-medical interests will push me to EM or anesthesia though.

And if I burn out and hate clinical medicine: path.

Still, one of the biggest appeals of medicine was that just about every specialty seemed like one I could carve a happy niche out of. So who knows...

Edit:
It's almost overwhelming. I feel like I'm back to wear I was at the end of highschool; shoved in front of dozens of paths with no damn clue which one to spend my life on and less than four years to figure it out.

Nice, I'm happy to see a bunch of us interested in EM.

Do all of you also have the attention span of a gold fish? Also, do any of you have horrible study habits, aka spend the night before the test with 4 redbulls and the textbook? God, I need to get some study skills together really bad, I remember the longest I ever studied for anything ahead of time was the MCAT (I was pretty impressed with myself for keeping it up as long as I did). Two weeks before the test I would read for four hours and the last week I did nothing but take mcat after mcat doing over 6 hours a day. Thats not gonna cut it in med school sadly.

I'm exactly like you. I'm hoping that the sheer amount of information that I have to learn and my excessive fear of failure will keep the procrastination at bay.

I'd say maybe anesthesiology or neonatology (i know that's a fellowship, so...pediatrics). I think i'd enjoy neonatology more than anesthesiology. I think babies are the greatest.... They're like kittens and puppies, only cuter and less fuzzy (wow, did I really just say that??). And....they don't bite, which is great. That's was sort of a joke... But seriously, I have a soft spot for babies because I feel so bad that they don't understand what's happening to them. I find that it makes the experience much more emotional, which i don't consider a bad thing. It's ok to be human and have feelings, right...? I really really enjoyed shadowing in the ICU. All the better to combine that AND babies! I know...I'm horrible at explaining why... but anyway. Neonatology would be my choice. We'll see what happens!

Edit: the comment about babies not biting....While working in veterinary hospitals, I experienced many dog and cat bites. It hurts.

Neurosurg...been wanting to do that since I was a kid. Now it all depends on that little test on Jun 17...

So, you like gas of all sorts. haha - bad joke.

Rad Onc or Ophtho for me at this point in time :xf: Will definitely be interesting to see what happens... 🙂

IM, EM, or OB/GYN. Basically, I am completely undecided.

Gas or ENT...possibly neither...

Have you ever been gummed in the boobie by a nursing infant? NOT pleasant. 🙁

For me its ophthalmology, dermatology or combined plastics.

Oh crap, I just realized I gotta compete with all you bastards for the University of Cincinnati, Denver, Hennipen, UMich, and UCLA-Harbor Spots. God dang. I hope all of you hate the cold . . . (you can have ucla).

I'm guessing this is for sh*ts and giggles unless you are a finishing up your third year. So for me, I'd say; Gas, Radiology, Pathology, Opthal, Surgery (General or Ortho).

Man, I don't know what you're talking about - I've heard that Cincinnati and HCMC are terrible EM programs - don't know why anyone would even apply there

anything hospital based...be it EM, Peds, IM, or FM. Only thing I'm certain of is: NO CLINIC!!!!!!!!

Lol, did the EM ferry spill this to you in your sleep? If so, it must be right . . . 😉😉😉😉😉😉

What do you mean 5hits and giggles? I am doing a publication off of this god dammit . . . 😛

Just for fun I think I may enjoy:

Pathology
Radiology
IM: Heme/Onc if specialized
Peds (?)

Soon I will find out that I really have no idea. But, everybody has a hunch going into medical school, right? Even if it is completely wrong, I feel like I've got to at least have a guess.
