My state has no dental school private or public, it does however participate in the WICHE program which means I can go to western schools like Colorado, Utah, and UCLA for in state tuition.

The big problem with this is that only a limited amount of students are granted this scholarship, and they never disclose how they determine who gets this funding or not. Without funding these schools become as expensive as high end private schools for OoS students.

I am think about applying to cheap private dental schools like LECOM, New England, and Creighton, but I have also heard that a lot of these are new which limits opportunities for specialization and gaining a strong clinical background.

Does anyone have any suggesstions on what the best schools to apply to are for someone in my situation?

If price is a major factor in your decisions, look into schools which offer in-state tuition after 1st year.

I'd apply to cheaper private schools, California schools, OHSU, Colorado, UNLV, Utah, UW, etc.

Aside from everything people have commented on here, I would also looking into the HPSP or NHSC scholarship programs. They both would pay 100% of your dental school education or very close to 100%. This way, you could go to whichever dental school you wanted and not have to worry too much about loans.

I have been looking into both of these scholarships and it would make going to my dream school (Columbia) possible.

My biggest gripes with the scholarships are that they seem to limit opportunities to specialize. And I fell in love with OMFS when I shadowed. I am well aware about how hard it is to get into a residency program, but i still want to keep as many doors as possible open.

I think that's true with the NHSC scholarship; however, with the HPSP scholarship, the different military branches offer their own OMFS programs, so you would still be able to pursue OMFS. I'm not doing HPSP, so I couldn't go into too much detail about this, but you can probably search on these forums and find more info.
