Hello~ I was hoping I could get some advice from you all.. 🙂

The usual path that pre-meds/pre-dental students take at my school is doubling up, during their sophomore year, orgo and physics (Orgo I & Physics I fall semester and Orgo II & Physics II spring semester), and as of right now, that is what I have in my schedule for the upcoming fall semester..

However, I just found out from a friend that he has chosen to take Genetics with Orgo I instead. I also found out that many others have chosen to take that route as well. I feel that would be a much smarter road to take for me, especially since I am not a science genius :/

Unfortunately, all the genetics courses are closed, and although I am on the waiting list, there are many others in line before me. My chances of being able to take genetics this fall are low.

SO, I was hoping that someone in this forum would be able to suggest an alternative class I can take with Orgo I next semester 🙂 I am planning to double up with Physics I and Orgo II spring semester; I just need a filler class I can take instead of genetics and physics I this fall semester.

I still am not decided on a major, but I am leaning towards becoming a biological sciences major, and perhaps an econ and psych double minor ://

Thank you!!

Why not just take physics? For me taking organic relatively early (before most of my other upper level sciences) worked out well because a lot of times you will be able to link at least some of the material in class (for example biochem, micro, biophysical chem) to something I learned from organic. Organic doesn't have much implement for physics imo, but that was just my experience.

Plus physics is not on the DAT so go ahead and get it out of the way so the bio courses you take junior year will be fresh on your mind.

I went with orgo and an upper level biol class too. I decided this because physics is not on the dat that I plan to take in January. So I rather focus on material that help with my next goal high dat scores than physics as a gpa booster. I understand why pre-med student take orgo/physics because there both on the mcat.

Fillers
Microbiology, anatomy, cell physiology (molecular biology), immunology, histology, etc.
Look at your degree sheet and pick from the upper level bios

I would take biology before/with organic chemistry. Physics is best put off for junior year to take along side with histology, human antomoy, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, etc.

The general path(for semesters) is

year 1: chemistry/chemistry
year 2: biology & organic chemistry/biology & organic chemistry
year 3: physics/physics
year 4: upper levels

Ohh I see. That makes sense! It's just, I don't feel confident juggling both orgo and physics at the same time for a whole year D:

I'm thinking of taking the DATs towards the end of my junior year, so I guess our case is a little different 🙁( Ahh so I guess it would be best to decide on my major as quickly as possible so I can just take a class that would fulfill the major requirements.

Which would you say would be the best to take alongside orgo?

I AP'ed out of bio, so that's why I didn't take it with chem this year. But thank you everyone, for your help!!! I will check to see if any of these upper level bio courses are open for fall semester.

Oh, and any advice for a major? Preferably science?

Nvm don't take pchem take medical micro or animal bio

I would take physics junior year. Btw, a genetics course can be very difficult. It goes way beyond and in more detail than the genetics you briefly cover in general biology.

Genetics at our school doesn't seem to be so bad. And I definitely think I want to split up physics sophomore and junior year. So, I just need a class for next fall semester :help:

Understandable, but remember in dental school you will have to juggle about 4 or 5+ of those classes each semester. I know at UT-Memphis you do 35 semester hours for your first two semesters (70 hours in one year!!!), not sure how other schools do it but that is a LOT of courses. Don't forget that showing the admissions committee that you can handle a full load plays a part in their decision making.
