Just received my MCAT scores and I am uncertain how to proceed. My score was a 28 (10 bs, 11 vr , 7ps). I was averaging 10 in PS and the day of the test I feel nerves got the best of me in that section.

My gpa (verified by amcas) is 3.55 cgpa, 3.05 spga. Thing is I am non-trad. Started taking pre-reqs in undergrad (freshman yr) and did absolutely terrible in those 4 classes (due to illness). Stopped the pre-med track after 1st semester sophomore yr and finished with my degree in art/soc minor. Did a diy post bac and have gotten A's in every single class. I gave been doing them (mostly 2 at a time) while working full-time, so I guess strong upward trend. However, due to those initial science classes my sgpa is only 3.0. Registered to take upper levels while I apply, so that will continue bringing it up.

ECs: tons of shadowing (peds, oncology), worked as aide (over 1000 hours pt contact from that alone), practically co-run a health agency (my current job... I hold many titles within the agency, also gives me patient exposure), was an R.A. (2 years), intern through my college health office, mentorship for inner city youth, counselor in juvenile correctional facilities for 3 years and some other stuff. No research (no time due to crazy work sched) but was hoping to pick up some hours while applying.

I only applied to one state school (I am in NY). Figured I'd add more when I got my score. Still awaiting AACOMAS verification ( with D.O. grade replacement sgpa would be 4.0, cgpa should be 3.7ish?). Unsure how to proceed. I want to (have to) retake for that PS score. Happy with the other two. I guess withdraw my AMCAS app? Im ok with D.O. but wanted to give myself a shot at both. Any help is appreciated.

*URM= african american (first generation american). Don't know if that means much.

Please don't quote this post.

Anyone have advice? Adcoms ? I could really use help and I thank you for all your help in advance.

Thanks so much for responding. I will continue to take upper level classes while applying so although it won't be my verified grade I'm hoping to continue getting good grades.

Should I retake my mcat for a better PS score for this cycle or is it too late? Also as far as school list are there any other schools I should be targeting (outside the hbcu schools)? I will apply DO as well (@Goro any help there & in general?)

Thanks a lot again for your response! I appreciate it.

Concur with my learned colleague gyngyn. Start with all NY schools, an those in PA except U Penn, and work your way outwards from there.

You're a lock for any DO program, so start with NYITCOM, Touro-NY, PCOM, and again work outwards. Skip LUCOM.

I would not plan a retake for this cycle. Your PS isn't that bad. That Sgpa... Either way, you still have a good shot if you apply soon.

Thank you so very much for your advice @gyngyn & @Goro. I really do appreciate it! I will come back & update with my final school list in the next day or two. You guys are awesome!

So I have taken the advice that you guys have given me and kept that in mind and altered my list (from I had previously). I picked schools where I would want to live and have accepted applicants with my numbers. @Goro @gyngyn (and anyone else with any help) how does my list look? Any schools I should strike off or add? Should my list be more DO & less MD? Thanks again for your help! I appreciate it.
