I attend the University of Georgia as a freshman (in the fall, I will be a sophomore). I am a Biology major and Pre-Medicine. I have done fairly well on my grades, messing up here and there and my first semester I received a 3.3 GPA (its on a 4.0 plus minus system). My second semester I did fairly well except for in General Chemistry II. I received a C for my overall grade in the course. It is available to take over the summer at UGA. Knowing that I will, in turn, buckle down and start to do very well in my next classes, should I re-take it in the summer? It will have both grades shown when medical schools see it but will average my grade point together for my GPA, most likely changing the final to be around a B instead of a C, significantly increasing my GPA. Should I just let it slide, move on and just work hard on the rest of my classes and not re-take it or should I re-take it? I just want to know what would look best for medical schools because I've heard from many people both sides of the argument.

If I don't re-take chem 2, then I will study for my organic chem I course over the summer and probably study for my Biology 1107 (bio 1 for bio majors) which will prepare me for those and allow me to start up on the right foot again.

it may be a good idea to retake it...you may end up learning more. Also if you do retake it be sure that you get an A at the least otherwise i would be pointless because as you stated AMCAS averages the two grades.

to be honest, the only reason it was that low is because my 3rd test I failed due to me pledging this semester also (i crossed the same day that I had the exam so there was no chance to study) so that dropped my grade real low, when I had A's on my first two tests of three. So it's not a lack of knowledge but just I got screwed that one day. But I'm planning on going over all my chem 2 work anyway over the summer also.

I wouldn't retake it. Just take orgo and keep your grades up there. Reassess in a year or two if it's really bothering you. Contrary to SDN "knowledge," it is possible to successfully apply to medical school with a C on your transcript.

I've had pre-med advisors and deans of admission tell me they'd rather see you do better in a more advanced class than retake a prereq.
