rejections from in-state-heavy schools should not be a surprise for a "pretty average" applicant. you should not have applied there to begin with.

even though you applied fairly early, it is still early in the cycle. be patient. what's the status with your state schools?

in terms of sending updates: i thought people generally don't send them until they get put on hold or get to the interview/waitlist phase. someone else correct me if i'm wrong here, though.
