hi everyone, so i have a huge problem. I recently got kicked out of my masters program because of my GPA. I had been accepted on probation in the fall of 07 because of my 2.55 Overall GPA and my graduate GPA now was a 2.95
its not that i couldnt do the work its just that close to the end of the semester i started having problems with my status as an international student and actually found out that i was out of status and got caught up with the thought that i might be deported.

now i dont know if to go ahead and reapply to another postbacc program or just take the time off to fix my student visa so i have a clear head to focus better. But I dont want to be too old when I start applying to med school...

arrrrrgh, I am so confused.😕😕😕

It sounds to me that your more pressing need is to fix your student visa since it is after all, the only way you can remain in the country. After you get that fixed, then Id suggest going on with your plans. How old is old? I have friends who are in their mid 30s and in medical school- there's no such thing as too old. What's another year or so to fix your student visa if it means that you'll be allowed to stay in the country. Question though- how come you cant fix your student visa while doing the postbac? Is it really that time consuming to fix it?

its just waiting for the ins to get to my application. one never knows. they might approve my application for permanent residence or they might deny it. it just depends on the time they make a decision on it.

i copied this post to the non trad forum becos i wasnt sure where exactly to put it

i had applied for a permanent residence status because i was told i would stand a lesser chance of getting into med school, after applying i no longer had an F-1 status, and my application was neither approved nor denied making me neither an illegal or out of status immigrant nor a permanent resident.

so i technically cannot apply to any school because i have no clear cut status so now i have to wait till a decision is made i guess.

This issue is really too complicated for this forum, in my opinion. As I understand it, you shouldn't lose your F-1 visa until you are granted another type of visa (such as H1-B) or permanent residency. Since you haven't gotten a green card yet, you should still be OK with your F-1.

However, being dismissed because of low grades might be the case for losing your F-1 status (if you aren't enrolled in school, there's no point for an F-1), which you should be able to regain upon entry at another school. But what do I know? I'm no expert. Good idea trying to get perm residency though, it'll make your life easier when applying to med school.

I suggest you get all the paperwork in order, and then re-enroll and do an SMP (if you weren't already). You need to show med schools that you can handle the workload. That will be your best shot I think. Good luck to you! I hope everything works out.

when i was younger, i was like you. ambiguous, waiting for the stupid green card.
this is how i went about school.
do you already have a visa slot.
if you did, then u must have filled the i-485.
do you have a receipt notice for the i-485.
you must have it if u r waiting for a decision.
so--
that i-485 basically acts as ur temporary "i'm not illegal" paper.

yes i do have that receipt.

I guess I am going to be the dickhead here.

OP, I honestly do not think that you are going to be able to get into a US medical school. Your very low overall GPA is the first problem. That by itself is not always a death sentence. You can do post-bacs and eventually get to the point where a solid SMP performance will allow you to get accepted somewhere.

The fact that you were kicked out of your masters program doesnt bode well. I figure most on this board would agree that an SMP is a bit harder than a regular masters program. Even if we assume that they are on a level playing field, you were dismissed. Even were you able to get into an SMP after remediating your GPA, do you feel that you could get a 3.7-4.0?

SMPs and masters are last chances for kids with low GPAs. You unfortunately didnt perform up to par. Personally I think you will be best served by setting your sights elsewhere: international medical schools or other medically related fields. In the end you will save yourself both time and money rather than go through years of schooling and tens of thousands of dollars to find that you dug yourself too deep a hole. IMHO

Seriously, are you actually following my post history and trying to refute what I say on every post, gasapple. I'm flattered that you care enough.

i know i can do it, its just this distraction, i sometimes think is studying even worth it if i am going to be sent home before i can get the degree i came to this country for.
