Hello guys this my first thread. I am currently a freshman at a four year institution in California. I moved to the United States of America last year in 2013 from a foreign country.

I want to ask i don't feel comfortable with my English, as English is my second language. I am thinking to take a Gap year after my first semester from school. And attend a local community college to improve my English in this Gap year and then return again to my four year institution.

i asked my professor and my pre-health adviser, but they totally didn't recommended.
How this will affect my application when i apply to Dental Schools ?
And what do you think it worth it ?

Any opinions or advices are totally welcome.!!

You English seems fine; you will naturally continue to improve and there's no need to take any gaps in your education. If you ever need help in your writing classes, just seek whatever supplementary services that your school offers.

I agree with @allenlchs. So much can change in 3 years so I would suggest just immerse yourself in the culture. Talk with as many people as you can to improve you English skills and re-evaluate it at a later date. You may surprise yourself. 🙂

Tottaly agree. Just take light full-time semester 12-14 units load; so you would have more time to study. I was ESL student also, you will be surprise how fast you can learn English in America.

Thank you for your reply
i have some problems with my speech; not all the people can understand me. Also my reading isn't the best between my classmates. I usually start to read early, as i take a lot of time to finish it comparing to the other.

Don't take a gap for your English. Take it from someone who studied English throughout his early education, your English at this point can only be improved by using it. Last year unable to say one sentence without saying "um" now it is less and I notice that I get more comfortable when I speak with friends.

The only thing that I should warn you is if you are the type of international student that only hang out with group of friends that speak your mother tongue, your Confidence in English will not improve. Try to talk to your classmates as much as possible. Heck sometimes I jump into girls conversation about different kind of heels for practice.

If you were to choose this route, it would not reflect negatively on you considering your reason, when it comes time to apply to professional school. If you are feeling completely overwhelmed during this term, and feel your GPA is suffering as a result, I think your solution is a reasonable one.
