Hey guys, im somewhat new to this forum stuff, however, i find it very informative just looking at the posts. I am a freshmen student majoring in chemistry. I have been wondering which career I will pursue. I am considering between Pharmacy and Osteopathy. Pharmacy, since i like the integration of math and science that pharmacy offers. Osteopathy because i have always loved sports and have always been fascinated with medicine. I have worked fo a year in a nursing home and i always am excited when doctors come and check the patients. I want to be involved in sports medicine somehow as a Sports med physician or Pm&R specialist.

The problem though is that i cant decide.

Do you think i should apply to both DO and pharm schools?

Thanks guys

Oh my. You're so young! You don't need to decide on a career now. I think you should just focus on school and spend some time volunteering and asking people who are in those programs about their experiences. There are internship programs everywhere that allow you to work in hospitals and universities so that you can really get a feel of how things are. It's wonderful that you're thinking so far ahead because that means you're more driven to discover and learn more about them, but don't get anxious about not being able to decide. You have a few more years left before you actually apply, so make the most out of it!

In the end, if you really cannot decide (and you have taking the prereqs for both those programs), you can definitely apply to DO and pharm schools. Just check up on the pharm reqs because I believe they require you to take social science courses, which you may not need to take for MD, DO, or even for your major.

Good luck! 😛

Thanks for the advice, ill surely do that. How can i look for DO's or pharmd's to shadow? do i just pic up the yellow pages and start calling them?

Yellow pages are one way to do it, especially if you are specifically interested in osteopathy. Since we (actually I'm only an OMS I so I don't know where I get off saying we...) are a small group they would probably be excited to hear from someone. I know when I was in undergrad there was a pre-medical advising office and a volunteer office at the affiliated health sciences center that were both eager to set me up with local doctors who liked having newbies shadow.

"Fourth: Hey, you ever go camping with Brasky?

Third: Many times.

First: I went camping with Brasky, his wife, and his daughter Debbie!

Third: Debbie Brasky?

First: Debbie Brasky. She's 7-years-old, goes about 3'5", 55 pounds. So, I'm in the back of a pickup with Bill Brasky and a live deer! Well, Brasky, he grabs the deer by the antlers, looks at it and says, "I'm Bill Brasky! Say it!" Then he squeezes the deer in such a way that a sound comes out of its mouth - "Billbrasky!" It wasn't exactly it, but it was pretty good for a deer!

Third: That's Bill Brasky! "

I think your first stop would be your premed advising center. They might have information about summer programs volunteering in hospitals, in the ER, etc. Working in the hosp will give you a general idea of how doctors and nurses interact and how the hosp functions as an entity.

If your premed office doesn't have info about DO's in the surround area, or even MD's... you can try searching for them yourself. Emailing, I believe, would probably be the best way because a lot of practicing doctors have receptionists who answer the phones and take messages, and some docs may not return your message. Be prepared to be ignored because sometimes it happens, but don't get discouraged.

Good luck! 😛
