Hello everyone,

So I am taking my MCAT this July. End of July to be specific. I am taking a kaplan course. I am also taking 2 classes...Physics 2 and Organic chemistry 2. Oh and also working but that's only 10 hours a week or less and in a biochemistry lab so it helps for EC. My question is....how much does it help to have orgo 2 done before you take ur mcat?? I can either JUST take physics...and spend rest of my time studying for mcats...or take both classes...(in a way studying for both is studying for mcat but ive heard orgo is only a little part of mcat and only basics). So would orgo 1 be enough if im studying from kaplan books? or do guyz really recommend i take both courses before my mcat?

My recommendation would be that you take both. If you absolutely couldn't, I agree that Orgo 2 would be the first thing to cut, but there are going to be gaps in your knowledge base that could get you on the test.

hm, i was actually about to say that orgo II was quite helpful for me on the MCAT. but i guess if you've got a solid foundation in orgo I you will be able to teach yourself what you need to know for the MCAT... i think it would probably be just becoming familiar with a bunch more reactions. not too much conceptual stuff. except NMR, which you may have gotten in orgo I. (i had it in orgo II.)

and i must say, when i first looked at your username my mind reversed the i and the second a. i was wondering why you had chosen that name. then i remembered how to read 😉

Lol, me too! I was trying to decide if my misread was obscene before I looked at it harder. I was thinking to myself, I probably couldn't get away with shouting 'labia' on the street, but would enough SDNers know that it was just latin for 'lips', and therefore not obscene in and of itself? We do like the anatomy terms... And then I too remembered how to read.

Taking classes provide you with the background for MCAT and I think they're important. However, keep in mind that actually studying specifically for the MCAT is irreplaceable no matter the courses you've taken. Schedule some time to just sit down and focus specifically on MCAT. A month of intensive studying is usually sufficient.

Orgo 2 isn't essential to have taken for the MCAT if you are taking a Kaplan course. As long as you read the review notes for the whole thing/study orgo a little more you will be fine. Orgo on the mcat is all about understanding lab techniques sn1/sn2 /chirality/ pushing electrons-most of these are orgo 1 concepts. You can definitely overcome not having the background in orgo 2 by studying more. Also, orgo is small percentage of the test to begin with. If you ask your kaplan instructor, they will likely tell you the same thing (It is a commonly asked question).

Physics 2 is much more relevant to the test (I found).
