Hi All,

I am a senior at a highly selective liberal arts school with a 3.54 gpa. I'm currently signing up for classes and I'm wondering what I should do. I could take med biochem, except it is supposed to be very difficult to get an A. Should I take it and hope for a B+ or forget about it and take easier courses to raise my gpa. I have some very good EC's and will receive very good recommendations. Basically, I'm wondering if med schools look favorably on this course even though I probably will not get an A, or if it's better to take something easier to raise my gpa. Thanks!

Since you're a senior, will getting an A really raise your GPA by that much?

It'll help my sGPA a bit if I got an A. I guess my real question is: do med schools really like to see undergrads take biochem? Because if it's not that big of a deal to them, I won't take it since it will consume a ton of time, but if they really look at it favorably, then I will.

I wouldn't take it, that class is notoriously known to kill GPAs.
And your GPA is on the low side, don't risk it.

Your going to want to take biochem. If you get a B+, who cares. Just get A's elsewhere. As long as your sGPA is >3.50 in the end there is no harm. In the end you'll be better prepared. If you can inflate your sGPA to >3.60 for sure than you think about it and weigh your options. But if you take courses to inflate your GPA and only inflate it to 3.8 or so than it isn't worth time inflating.

And Blackhouse, It isn't that bad. You havn't even taken it yet 😛

biochemistry seems to be on its way to becoming a requirement. there are already several schools that require it. not a lot of them yet, but some. of my list i have that duke/osu/case require it, and i believe hopkins does too.

if you're not going to take it, check your list you're going to apply to!

Ok, so my sGPA is something like a 3.43. Do psychology classes count towards science GPA?

Thanks for the info.

No unless they're psych stat classes (math) or psych neuroscience classes (bio)

I would take biochem if I were you. I am also going into my senior year and didn't really want to take biochem, so I asked my advisor and searched around the forums, and the general consensus seems to be that you should take it.
