Hello everyone,

Just looking for some advice, I know I should have figure this stuff on my own but there are so many options it can be overwhelming. I graduated from a pretty well known university in 2008. I had struggles early, my g.p.a is a 2.75 and Science 2.7. I figured I would not try for medicine anymore; so I worked for a year and now getting my MPH. I am doing pretty good with a 3.4 GPA. There are a lot of people in the program that tell me to get back om track with Medical School which motivated me to go after my dream again. I am taking the MCAT in January(I believe i can get to 24-25 at least). I am more likely going to apply to some post bac programs especially those tailored to minorities since I am a black male. My list include, Georgetown (GEM), Touro (Masters), Hunter, Drexel (Pathway) and maybe LECOM.

Are there any other program a profile like mine should consider or any other course of action I should take?

Another SMP catered to URMs is Wake Forest. As far as course of action, you may want to consider capitalizing on the grade replacement policy employed by DO schools in order to expedite your GPA repair (because you've got some SERIOUS work to do). I recommend starting by retaking those courses in which you received a C or worse.

i understand I have alot of work to do but I would rather take a post bacc then do these cousres over again. I was told as long as you get a 3.5 in your post bacc med schools will have interest in you.

I wouldn't quite say that. Ideally, a 3.6 + is what's expected, especially if you have a low GPA. Plus, you are doing decent in the MPH, but a 3.4 is a bit low compared to what people expect. You will need to get your GPA past a 3.0 to be considered.

An MPH is useless for your app. And a 3.4 is not very good, its better than you have been doing but its still not cutting it.

Re-taking the pre-reqs will boost your DO-style GPA calculation, but not MD.

And you need to be doing a bit better than a 24/25 on the MCAT

You'll need to re-take all the pre-reqs and then do an SMP

Jamburke, with that undergraduate GPA you should be gunning for a 3.8+ GPA in a post-bacc until you bring your cGPA to 3.0, definitely 30+ on your MCAT, and then like rob said possibly a SMP.
