I've got a few days before I sign up for next semester so I guess i'll ask you guys. I've got a gap year now between medschool and undergrad, so I'm going to finish up a minor and graduate in the winter. But, I could defer and graduate in the spring while taking a few more classes that may help with medical school. Or I could listen to online courses like MIT or etc. What do you guys think?

So I could either 1 Grad in the Winter and Take:
Neuro Lab
Animal Behavior
Neuro sem
Biochem 1.

or
Grad in the summer and take:

All of the above +
Path Micro
Immunology
Bio of Cancer


Any other options? I'm considering BYU's online Anatomy.
 
Graduate and get out of there. Why waste money on tuition, rent, etc. when you can be done?

Those things do interest me. Though the neuroscience courses more so than anything else. But yah, I'm leaning more at the moment to graduating in winter and spending the spring doing the BYU anatomy course and some others like in the Duke online system.

Have you applied to med school yet? If not, do something that helps you GPA, while allowing you to GTFO of undergrad ASAP, the longer you are in school, the higher the risk you carry to ruin your GPA. I say this now because I was one of those overzealous pre meds..


Don't worry about getting a head start on first year; pace in med school is so fast that they cover a quarter's worth of material in a week, basically whatever you do to catch a head start now won't matter.

I'll be doing that this summer. So none of this will have any impact on my gpa for admission sakes.

Have you taken any anatomy before? When I was in undergrad I only took cat anatomy (as in meow) and that's enough for first year med school. But if I were you i'd get a hold of Rohen anatomy and just casually read, anatomy is just rote memorization, no real need for any sort of instruction.

I'm also of the mind that you should graduate and be done for a bit. If you have the $ and interest, BYU's online classes are great, from my experience. I never saw that they had Anatomy, but that's a pretty good prep class if you feel like taking something.

I took A&P 1 in my second year of college.

yeah, that's a little different then. But still I looked at the BYU course, it's quite expensive and honestly I don't think you'll need that., i'd still recommend Rohen's. If you need some systematic introduction to anatomy, get Gray's as well.
 
Glad you decided to graduate and get out there. Good call to save the tuition money. The true benefit of college is that it teaches you how to be an independent learner. With ridiculous amount of high quality content available on the internet and your intellect you can learn essentially anything you want online. This is pretty fricken cool in my opinion!!

Agreed, I basically go to wikipedia school of osteopathic medicine now lol

Then don't do it. Just pay a tutor 20 bucks on hour to go over some of the 1st year med classes a month or so out from matriculation if you're worried about being overwhelmed. Extra classes won't help you at all but if you do some of the first few chapters before school starts you'll get the confidence and actually spend your time wisely on stuff you need to know.

Save your money and work.

Step 2: Get accepted to Nova so you can go to school with me
Step 3: Get a full time job and save money
Step 4: Profit

Yah, which is why I decided more or less not to do it. I imagine firstly that I'd forget all of path micro and then just staying to finish immunology would be low yield and I probably can find an open course on a site like MIT or something.
 
I'm in anatomy at BYU right now and I definitely wouldn't take it unless you have to. I don't know about the online one, but if you get some bad pins from some TA's that try to be tricky it can be a tough class to get an A in. And it's all just memorization anyways which you can do with your own book.

I guess I was thinking of profit as a broader term...referring to personal happiness and accomplishment. The 200K+ dept will pay itself once Serenade becomes a psychiatrist/neurologist extraordinaire.
