What should I memorize for the solubilty Rules?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Big ones to know are: 1. All salts of alkali metals are h20 soluble, All salts of ammonium ions are water soluble
2. All chlorides, bromides, and iodides are h2O soluble except salts of Ag, Pb, or Hg.
3.Salts of sulfate = soluble, with the exceptions of Ca, Sr, Ba, or Pb.
4. All metal oxides are insoluble, exceptions alkali and Ca, Sr, Or Ba.
5. All hydroxides are insoluble, except alkali and Ca, Sr, or Ba
6. All carbonates, phosphates, sulfides, sufites are insoluble, except alkali and ammonium.

Thanks! I will memorize this list - I look over different gen. chem books and they seem to be either very convoluted or very broad. Peace.

Does anyone have a very concise list of what to memorize (or what should be memorized) for the solubility rules?

Thanks 😍

It's more likely that there'll be a table of Ksp values provided when asking about solubility, but should they ask a general question about solubility, it's helpful to know the common ones. Here's a mnemonic I've borrowed from a fellow SDNer.

the mnemonic is:

"CASH 'n Gia"

The story behind this mnemonic is that you're a pimp, and gia is your hoe and so you need collect your money from her aka "Cashing from Gia"

The following are soluble:
C - Chlorates
A - Acetates
S - Sulfates
H - Halogens

N - Nitrates
GIA: Group IA Metals

EXCEPT:
for S: Calcium (Ca), Barium (Br), Strontium (Sr) - Think "CBS"
for H: Calcium (Ca), Barium (Br), Strontium + "Happy" (Hg, Ag, Pb)

If it's not part of CASH n' GIA, it's INSOLUBLE.

A nice mnemonic, sure. But also slightly wrong information, and incomplete. Calcium and barium halides are definitely soluble. Fluorides, though, are generally insoluble. It leaves out ammonium ion, which is almost always soluble. Hydroxides are generally insoluble, but barium hydroxide is notably soluble. Sulfides are generally insoluble, but calcium, barium, strontium, and magnesium sulfides are all soluble.

Of course the latter few are really beating it to death, and unlikely to make or break in the MCAT.
