Hi All,
I was wondering what should we expect the first year of od school? In other words, can you be so kind to list your day to day schedule such as how many hours in class, how many hours of studying after class and on the weekend...etc. I'm trying to get a good idea of how hard it may be and how much time is required the first year or first sememster of the first year. If possible I would like to hear from students that are attending Nova but please still reply no matter what school you attend.

Thanks!

I go to UHCO..... all your time will be spent at school, and when you get home you have to study until bedtime. Since i've been in opt school I seriously have no life 🙁

I am 1st year at UMSL and so far I have had the same experience. I don't want to scare everyone though because I know that not everyone is the same. There are some people in my class that don't seem to have to work that hard at all and are able to survive. Personally though, this first semester has been the most demanding and difficult thing that I have ever experienced in school. It is a challenge, but I am learning that it is not impossible. I would imagine that every school has different classes that seem to be the most difficult. At UMSL, I would definately say that A&P is the worst! I am hoping that second semester will be better. Even if it seems like hell, at least it will only last 4 years.

As a PCO student, you will take about 25 hrs. your first semester. The classes include Biochem, Anatomy (head and neck), Optics, Clinical Skills, Principles of the Optometric Profession, Clinical Problem Solving, Histology, Statistics, Physiology, & very little Pharmacology. A typical day begins at 8 in the morning and goes until 4 in the afternoon. Then, I would usually go home and unwind for an hour and get back to studying from about 5 until I went to bed (about 12 or 1 am). With the exception of only two weekends, I studied solid. You will spend four hours, one day, every other week in clinic in observation. The first semester of the first year is supposedly much easier than the second. However, the second semester of the first year is said to be the hardest of any semester at PCO. So far, the material hasn't been terribly difficult. There are just so many details to remember!!!
