What southern universities have a good opthamology program?

I'm just curious as to if anyone on here is studying to be an opthamologist as to what university they are attending. I am a Florida resident so would prefer to attend a Florida school but am aiming for the best possible school available. Thanks for any help you provide in advance.

Are you asking about med schools? Residencies? Undergrad?

BTW, it's "ophthalmology." : )

Doesnt UMiami have one of the best ones in the country at Bascom-Palmer?

That's my understanding but I just began looking in all honesty I didnt know what the best sources for info were and came upon these forums and was amazed by the amount of content. Basically I'm a 3rd year college undergrad student who is open to transfers etc in order to best assist myself in getting into the best program in the region.

I am curious to find out how one becomes a basically-3rd year. 😀

You have to go to a med school first, and then do a residency in your desired interest.

Here is a list of schools.

UAB (UASOM) has a separate hospital just for eyes. We also have an opthalmology residency program. I've never seen a listing of rankings for opthalmology programs. However, there is a lot of money in BHAM tied up in eye research, and our med school was top 20 in NIH funding last year, so I am betting this is a good place to be. As far as getting into a residency goes, you should know that opthamology is one of the more competitive ones, so even if you get into med school, you may not get into an optho program. Should you consider transferring? You won't apply for opthalmology until you are actually in medical school. You can apply to any program in the country, from any medical school you get into. So strictly speaking, you could go to med school anywhere. However, doing eye research with the people who are in charge of the optho residency at your friendly neighborhood med school isn't a bad idea. Some people from UAB get in each year, and several people from elsewhere get in. This suggests that your odds are better if you are "local" talent.

good luck

Actually matching into optho is a long way off - no need to worry about getting into "the best program in the region" right now. It's not clear whether you are looking for "the best ophtho program" or "the best med school to get you into ophtho." As far as getting into the best program, it really doesn't matter. You will find once you get into med school that all that matters is getting into the specialty/subspecialty you want, and maybe into a particular geographic region/city. It won't really matter what program you did your post-graduate training at.

Finish college.

Then apply to med school.

Then worry about ophtho residency. Ophtho is very competitive, but I don't think I know of any particular school that has extraordinary success in placing students. If you want to see if there is one, look at the match lists. There is a post somewhere with links to a few years of match lists for almost every school.

Hey thanks a lot for the info everyone I really appreciate it. I think I jumped into this conversation blind to a lot of facts and am really just open to learning. I've had a tough past few years and practically had to start from scratch in college among other things and am just trying to learn the processes to in time get to this profession. I appreciate all the informative words greatly and apologize if my questions seem dim-witted.
