Got my score back recently and got a 233. I know the super competitive ones are most likely out, and I know family and peds are still in. However, I’m more curious about the middle of the pack specialties like OB, EM, Anesthesia, Radiology etc. Also curious what kind of IM programs I’m limited to with this score. Thank you guys!

A 233 doesnt doom you to primary care lol

you’d be competitive for all of those specialties you listed

If you are a USMD with a home program in any of those specialties you are still in the running.

Suggesting that if I were to apply to say an outside EM program I have a worse chance?
no, you need a home program to help prepare you, you need to talk to the program director to see what programs you should apply to, when to do a sub I at home for letters maybe crank out an abstract or two.

People match into competitive specialties with 233s. They just work their butt off extra in other areas. Nothing is completely closed to you; it depends on how much work you are willing to put in.

All the fields you listed are achievable without doing anything crazy extra. The IM programs you are qualified for would depend on the rest of your app
Thank you!

I also got a 233 man and I felt pretty crushed because I was scoring high 240s low 250s on practice exams. The bright side is that it is a slightly above average score and assuming you're USMD that's not a bad position to be in. You'll be competitive for all the specialties you listed, and perhaps even the more gunnery ones if you take a research year and get in with the right people. Basically it's not a death sentence for anything.

Thanks so much for this! What are you thinking of going into?

Ahh that makes great sense. Thanks so much!

I don't have a home EM program.. Got a 231 step 1.. did 2 aways.. got 26 invites out of 38 applications.. You'll be fine for EM scores wise! as everyone always says... SLOEs are king
