I didn't like operative that much and I hate Crown and bridge so much. I am thinking GP is not for me.

If I don't like drilling, is there any thing in dentistry that I will like?
I have some basic idea about dentistry fields..
Perio: too bloody..
OMS:too long
Pros:hate it.. essentially all ope and C&B
pedo:kids..to hard to play with..

What about ortho and endo? what kind of works are they?I just started endo and still it is fun since I only did take X-rays and some file jobs.

Why do you want to be a specialty? Is there any thing you like?

One of my instructors told me that less work, more money with specialty..Is it really true?

I hope I can find something fun in dentistry..

Just wondering....Do you really want to be a dentist? Were you forced into this by a parent, relative, or friend? Did you not shadow a dentist? I had these haunting questions when I realized I didn't want to practice as a pharmacist.
But really...you haven't done any clinical stuff yet..so I wouldn't necessarily rule out any specialty or general dentistry until you rotate through all of the clinical disciplines first. It took me 3 years to decide that I would like to be an oral surgeon.
Also, you'll find that working with patients brings out a different dimension to the mundane pre-clinical courses. In fact the patients are the ones that really determine how much fun you can have. I used to dislike pros. (fixed and removable) but working with live patients is fun and rewarding.
Good luck

Thanks James. Good to know that preclinic work is not everything.
Definately, I shadowed a lot of dentists before I came to school and I really wanted to be a dentist. It was my decision.
By just observing it, all the procedures in dentistry looked pretty cool.

However, the nature of work in preclinic is much more detail oriented than I expected. I found that a lot of people were really good at it while I had really hard time.

I am just wondering if there is any dentistry field that I can be really good at it and like it. That's why I am asking nature of works in each speciailty.

Of course, I hope I can find out more rewarding experience in down clinic with patients even for C&B procedures.

Thank~!

Most schools have this philosophy of "hard in practice, easy in battle." They make preclinic exacting so that in clinic it will seem easier. 😀

I'm sure you will find a niche once you start clinic-- You will almost certainly gain exposure to all the areas of specialty in 3rd and 4th years.

If your heart is really going towards specializing, make sure you are maintaining a good GPA and get good NBDE scores!

Good luck.

I spoke with a dentist friend of mine recently and he shared his feelings on the preclinical stuff. He said that when he went to school, he struggled through the preclinical, but excelled in the clinic. He also remembered several people that aced their way through the preclinical struggled in the real clinic. So if you are worried about the preclinical stuff, keep at it, you may be lovin life when you get in the real clinic.
