I still have at least 2.5 weeks of waiting before I hear if I got into my state school. I am not sure if this has been done this year, but I think it would be intresting. Let us see where most of the people that post are state residents. Please vote for only one, unless your are using a dual residency for a school.

Hmmm.......

It's hard to keep a thread like this up since it doesn't expect a response, just a vote.

On that note, woo PA is winning(??) currently! 😀

🙁 Dang, now tied. Shouldn't have said anything

Aw you should have out an Other category for us Canadians 😉

Hey Kylana, is your avatar a hedgehog? Is it yours? Do they make good pets? It looks awesome!

Hedgies rule! I had one when I was a kid. We loved catching live insects for her, she was a machine when it came to kicking grasshopper butt. 😀 She was very sweet, friendly, and inquisitive, loved to roam around and explore... very nifty creature. She was also very easy to handle, even when balled up to the maximum -- if you cupped her softly the spines wouldn't hurt. Most of the time she was very relaxed around us though and kept her spines flat. They do this self-anointing thing where they'll lick something, usually a new scent, and then create a huge mess of foam in their mouths, which they'll then spread over their spines.

Hedgehogs are awesome 🙂 And adorable!

What about us over-sea peeps? We'd like a spot on this poll too!

Well I guess athenaparthenos gave you a pretty good description of what hedgies are like. But yes, that was (he passed away about a year ago...) my hedgie Chester. I really want another hedgehog though, but I'm currently living in residence at my university and they don't allow pets. But basically the more you handle them, the friendlier and more fun they are. I had another hedgehog who I'd always hold when I watched TV/movies and she'd fall asleep in my hands stretched out on her back with her belly exposed! So they definitley aren't always living pin cushions.

How cool! I've never seen one before and I don't know anything about them. I did a little googling, but I'm not sure how accurate those hedgie sites are...
what do you feed them? can they be litter trained? do they need to be kept at a certain temperature range? Can they be kept with other animals (like with guinea pigs) or do they need their own space? Do you have to bathe them?

Haha this is so far from the OP's topic but...

I fed mine cat food, live and freeze dried crickets and meal worms, and whatever fruits and vegetables they would eat. One of mine also liked hard boiled egg and turkey/chicken. One of the hedgehog breeders we got a hedgie from also recommended ferret food. There are a variety of specific Hedgehog foods available in pet stores, but my hedgies refused to eat any of them; plus I read on many websites that people had a lot of problems with some of these "hedgehog foods" anyways. Overall, I don't think anyone has a clear idea of what the best captive hedgehog diet is because they haven't been kept as pets for a very long time! Also, hedgies tend to be extremely picky eaters so all three of mine got slightly different diets depending on what they actually wanted to eat 😕

They can be litter trained although none of mine were. Mine just ran on their wheels all night and pooped there. But I have heard many people who were successful at litter training their hedgies.

Temperature isn't too critical for hedgehogs -- normal room temperature works just fine and they're pretty hardy. However it can't get too cold or drafty because they will start hibernating! (my friend left hers beside a door where there was a bit of a draft and it went into hibernation)

I never really thought about keeping hedgehogs with other animals like g pigs or anything so I'm not entirely sure. However, they're solitary animals in the wild so they are perfectly fine by themselves and males generally cannot be caged together (though I know several people who kept females together) I guess you could keep a female hedgehog with another animal... though on second thought this might not work. I think most animals are scared of hedgehogs (with good reason). If I put my hedgehog on the floor with my three dogs in the room, the dogs would basically flee because they were so freaked out.

I bathed mine sometimes because they did get dirty. They're pretty easy to bathe because if you put them in water they can't roll up. You just need a toothbrush/scrubbrush to get between the spines! They're generally pretty clean though and don't require frequent baths.

I just want to say--I think it's funny that this thread is now apparently about hedgehogs!

I will put an oversees poll, but I am not sure what counties need representation. It would be a long poll if I had to add all the countries in the world. LOL. Start a list, and I will add them!

representing the WestsidE! *southern cali here* hehe 🙂

Back to hedgehogs, how do you litter train them?

Also lets keep voteing!

Yeah, hedgehogs! Do they make any noises? (besides their exercise wheels squeaking?)

I'm gussing they're not really vocal little creatures...??

My rabbit "growls" quite often. Heheheh, it scares most people. At first he was doing it because he hated people and wanted them to stay away (abuse case), but now it's just his habbit and it's quite endearing. He'll do it when he's happy for food, or is playing/racing around for fun. When strange people try and come near him, he'll growl, and jump/lunge at them, but he'll just bounce off them. He stopped biting a while back.

glad to hear that the rabbit stopped biting. maybe we should just start a new thread about hedgehogs. I am really intrested. ill go start a new thread
