In my school they make us read chapters upon chapters and basically we have to memorize everything in it. We don't do powerpoints really. The exams tend to nitpick on the details. Some people in my school literally highlight the books to jam in all the info, while others don't do anything at all. Some others have suggested taking notes on the side.

What techniques have worked for you? To store all the info that you are learning into long term memory for the USMLE?

My best students use a variety of techniques, but repetition is the key to retention, and make sure you constantly test yourself, either by pimping yourself using flash cards, your classmates, and using as many question banks as you can get your hands on.

Qbank questions help tremendously with material retention.

Here were my preferred Qbanks in order of preference, even though all 3 of them are great resources.

UWORLD>>>>>>>Kaplan > USMLERx

Save UWORLD for the 6months or less before your Step exam though, no need to waste it early.
