We've all had terrible computer systems that take you thru a neurosurgery protocol when trying to order a tylenol, lab/radiology staff that don't wear watches, attendings more interested in the floor tiles than in sharing their wisdom. SO LETS HAVE IT!
Help out a kid trying to pick a residency that makes it EASY to be a resident! (I hear some places have CONCIERGE SERVICE for their residents!)
I'll start (from a student's perspective, UCSD residents please chime in): I love UCSD with everything I've got, BUT:
COMPUTERS: 2/5
- PCIS computer system is an obtuse, difficult system to interact with. Placing orders generally takes 30% more time than it should.
FACILITIES: 3/5
- old-school!
- Working at four different hospitals (VA, Hillcrest, Thornton, Mercy) gives experience w/ different types of patients, but it also makes it difficult to adjust and re-remember all passwords/nurses names/protocol for requesting prosthetics. Different parking permits, different ID badges. Traffic. Can't buy a house close to your hospital if your hospital is always changing locations!
COWORKERS: 5/5
- people are always on the move, but happy overall.
- very interested in research/sub-sub-subspecialization
OTHER: 1/5
- call rooms leave a lot to be desired.
- meal points vary by hospital
Again, I love the place, but will be taking these things into consideration when picking a residency.
