I'm looking at fafsa with several windows (a SDN search tab too!) and i feel like i'm missing something. I remember when i went to my umdnj interview, they said you can borrow up to 40,000 subsidized a year...? And if so, with which loan (federal stafford loan has a 8,500 limit per year)? Does everyone get it?

Anyway, for Penn, i remember they said that you could get around this amount too and the remainder you would have to find other loans. Does anyone know what the limit is, and if it is all subsidized? I talked to a Penn student and he said that Penn has programs that pay your interest. Anyone one heard of this?

Okay sorry, I'm obviously inept with financial stuff and my internet searches and my memory are inadequate. 😕

I could be wrong, but I think combo FAFSA loans (8500 subsidized and the remainder unsubsidized up to 44,000 per year) for a total of 160,000 something over a period of 4 years minus any FAFSA loans from undergrad or grad school can be taken out. Technically it is financial need based..at least the subsidized part, but I doubt its too hard to get since its govt.

everyone can get the stafford loan however only the 8,500 is subsidized meaning no interest while your in school. i assume most people take the full stafford amount which is 38,500 of which 30,000 is unsubsidized.

I think the amount went up a little from this estimate. Here is the info I found on a few sites. This is from the UNLV website.

Students may borrow a maximum of $45,167 in Stafford loan funds per academic year for the first three years of dental school. Stafford loan amount for final year is based on COA for two semesters and will be no more than $38,500
