hi guys,

so as i look through pre dent profiles from 2010 and back, i've noticed that private schools such as NYU tend to admit a decent amount of people with 3.0-3.3 overall/science gpas whereas a decent amount of people with good stats were rejected. now, i can understand if a few people with sub par gpas make up for it in personal statements, essays, interviews, etc., but what do you guys think about this situation?

Getting into D School is a crapshoot once you have the grades/DAT lol 🙄

Have to understand that some schools just want grades, don't care about personality, whereas some places will put more value in a personality, there's just so many things adcoms look at, a perfectly qualified applicant with great ECs, personality, experience, etc can get rejected..doesn't mean they didn't do anything wrong, just means luck wasn't falling their way when the adcoms looked at their app.

If you pay em enough money any private school will accept you regardless of your stats. Yah never know what happened behind the scenes in individual cases. Plus ill bet that most of those subpar acceptances were minorities.

When no statistical evidence is available it is usually a safe bet to place the blame on minorities.

actually, a lot of them claimed to be white or asian...interesting. so maybe it is a money issue?

like i remember when applying to college someone told me that if admissions officers waitlist you/were on the fence about your application status, you were more likely to be accepted if you didn't need financial aid, or something.

Why would you make that assumption about minorities? That's a bit racist in my opinion.

this thread is shifty and dangerous....watch out....admin will kill it

A 3.0 GPA at one school may be like a 3.8 GPA at another (it is much easier to 4.0 at community college for example). Also, some of those people with lower GPAs have above average DAT scores. You don't get the whole picture if you're just looking at the GPA range by itself.

I don't think anyone on SDN can argue that minorities don't get special treatment. Obviously minority status is important to you, since you included it in your signature.

Obviously you thought that minority status makes some kind of difference and has some significance or else you would not have put it there.

Why did you put it there?

at the risk of sounding biased or racist (which i AM NOT)......
Minorities and females are given higher priority......there has been a trend to increase minority and female dentists in the past few years.....this is simply a fact......it is in every dental school pamphlet floating around.

can you add married men to that list as well?

minorities does not = under-represented minorities?

minorities as discussed by the dental schools are hispanics and african americans and women (if you need specifics).....they are trying to increase these populations in the dental pool.....
And as for married men or women...yes....they appreciate married individuals as well

Like I said....i am not biased or racist.....im just presenting what i have read....and commenting on the thread

why do schools prefer married men? is it because they are more mature?

Diversity is not just racial diversity. Married students, older students, students from rural backgrounds, students from inner cities, students with children, etc.... all add to the diversity of a class and are looked upon favorably by adcoms.

Get a GPA of 3.85 +

Get a DAT of 22+

and you will be in any school that you like. No question asked.

OP, I've heard that sometimes expensive private schools like NYU and BU will deny students with super high stats because they suspect that the person is only applying to the school as a safety...i dont have any stats to back that up tho 🙄

also everything mentioned above about URMs and women getting more preference for diversity reasons, people usually feel most comfortable around people of similar backgrounds as themselves and dentistry is one of those professions that people still automatically picture a white man.

if i had a dollar for every time i tell someone i want to go to dental school and they say 'o you want to be a hygenist!'.... haha 😛

Yeah, and if you were a guy going to hygiene school everyone would ask: Why aren't you going to be a dentist?

Dentistry is seriously behind the times.

I think there is actually a term for that known as "yield protection" or "tufts syndrome" or something like that. I'm not sure as to how factual this actually is.

The reason I put it there was because much like DAT scores and gpa, it is another stat. Predents ask's you to put it on the profile so why is it wrong to put it in my signature? As you can see I'm a minority and I didn't do terrible on my DAT... All I'm saying is why is there an assumption that minorities will get into any school with any bad stats and if someone did manage to get into dental school with low stats its definitely a minority. Its basically like saying that we're all idiots and very insulting. Besides putting ethnicity aside... I can speak spanish fluently and plan on working in a primarily mexican populated area where my dads office is located. Why can't this be a reason of why I was chosen to get in? Why would the reason automatically be my race if somehow I was chosen to get into a school while someone with higher stats wasn't... There are more things adcoms look other than a gpa and dat score just my 2cents.

One more thing, no one on SDN can argue that there is a lack of mexican dentists that are willing to serve mexican communities in california. I know this first hand because while shadowing my dad I always see how new patients that arrive are so relieved that they finally found a dentist that can speak spanish and are very comfortable with.

Because if you are not a URM and you have low stats, your chances of being accepted are low!
