what the hell is Bentol?

so my attending asked me the other day about a drug called Bentol during rounds. I didn't know what it was, so he told me to look it up. For the past 3 days, I've been searching for what this drug is, and I can't seem to find any reference to it, nor a possible generic name for it. Has anyone heard of this drug?

Any help would be much appreciated.

well, besides being the name of a city in Liberia and the name of a chemical company, I discovered that Bentol was once a brand name for "benzydamine". I said once because I was only able to find one reference to it in an old website that no longer existed (google found one hit for it, but when I clicked on the link, it wasn't there anymore). I would agree that he had probably meant Bentyl (dicyclomine), which is similar to NuLev. It's mainly used as an antispasmodic for GI symptoms, especially IBS pts. Since it's anticholinergic, avoid in glaucoma pts! I wonder if it will be superseded by GI-specific selective serotonin receptor agonsists/antagonists like Zelnorm.

Dreaded enteric nervous system comes back to haunt me...

Hey guys, thanks so much. You're right I think he did mean Bentyl, b/c his question to me had something to do with this drug and stomach cramps, and later he mentioned something about it being an anti-cholinergic.

Agreed. It works great in the ED for that. Also when I was doing outpatient FP, we used a lot in our IBS patients, seems to work pretty well as long as the patient is amenable to medical therapy (some swear they need surgery).

Anyone tried it in renal colic? Not that I need to use another drug in my armamentarium for that, just curious.
