I have a year off..and I can't seem to find a rsearch job online. i tried monster and they all seem as if you need lab experience to apply...(plus I'm a business major premed). other than chem lab, bio labs, orgo lab (3 of them)... i don't have any other lab experience! what about pharma sales..(probably same issue)

what else could i do?

is there any master programs that are sitll accepting apps for this FALL enrollment???????

please help

im filling out apps and i may even have two years off considering how bad i did on the 20th (this 2nd time around) with these damn mcats!

go to the NIH website and click on research opportunitites and training. There is a program that gives research training/experience to recent college grads called Post-Bacc IRTA (intramural research training award). The position can last one or two years. Depending on where you are from you'd have to move out to Bethesda or one of the satellite campuses, however it is a paid research position (though not much) and you can get great research experience.

Even though you don't think you could get a lab job, try for it. Just email up a bunch of professors in every bio-related department at any nearby university, talk about your good points and ask if they need and have money for a tech. Tailor each email to each professor and his or her research. Pretend like you're interested in it. Email like 40 or 50 of them. More if you can...
Be prepared for a lot of rejections and a lot of silence, but it only takes one acceptance. Sort of like applying to med school, right?

I'm in the same boat, I've applied to about 10 research positions, and nothing... the only catch about the NIH deal is that you are supposed to apply 3+ months before wanting to start, so if you're only planning on one year out (like me) this might not be a good option. I'm pretty sure that research pay sucks everywhere, I mean I've heard people say they're getting $16/hr or more, but every job around here is more like 11 or 12 if you're fresh out of college with no real experience. And the thing is, I have experience in a lab, but it doesn't necessarily carry over into other labs, or at least that seems to be the case. I can say that I am dying of boredom without school or a full-time job and got a little frantic about it earlier this week. I've just been used to going all the time and have a hard time enjoying time off for what it is. Anyway, good luck to you.

I'm in the same boat :-(. Applied all over NYC!

What do you expect if you just graduated? You have no experience and you want to make 40k a year?

I actually was a Pre-IRTA 3 years ago and it was a great experience overall. The best thing about it is that you can apply at anytime and if there is a position open in a lab you will be contacted. And you don't have to be there the full year. I had a girl in the lab with me that was a Pre-IRTA for only 4 months and then got accepted into med school and left. You really don't get paid a lot - when I was there it was $22,500, but it may have gone up slightly since then. The amount that you get each month is not taxed because it is a considered a graduate research fellowship, but you do pay taxes quarterly because of this fact. I had a great lab experience, but I did know others that didn't like their lab very much. It is in Bethesda which is right outside of DC. The major downfall is that Bethesda and the surrounding areas have a very high cost of living. You won't wind up saving much after the year is done with but it's an impressive experience to put on your CV and to bring up in any future medical school interviews! You should at least check it out. Also - check out the CDC website - they have similar programs and they have satelitte locations outside of Atlanta ( and I think the pay may be higher)
