here is the letter that I recieved today from tufs:

Dear ...
I am writing to inform you that the admission committee has not selected you for an interveiw.
During the 2002-2003 application cycle, tufts received 2000 applications for 150 positions. Applicants typically invited for interview, have a GPA over 3.2, a science GPA over 3.0 and scores of 17 and above on the academic, PA and total science parts of DAT.
To strengthen your application for future, we encourage you to take additional upper level classes such as microbiology and histology, ... . Be aware that one term of biochemistry and minimum 30 hours of observation are now application requirements. the minimum scores for acceptance are a 15 academic, 14 perceptual and 15 total science.
........
blah, blah, blah.

Now, I want you to judge for yourself.
I am a senior that have already taken, histology and biochemistry and plan to take microbiology.
my total science GPA is 3.8 and my GPA is 3.88.
I didn't have any score lower than 19 on my DAT. my lowest scores were 19 on general chem and PAT. and all my other scores were 21.

I have already recieved my admission for U of F and the last thing I care about is recieving an interview from tufts.
but just judge for yourself.
If some university doesn't want to give you an interview, why do they have to make up non-sense? they can just say we didn't grant you interview becuase the class is already full but this...
It seems like the admission committee at tufts don't even care to read the applicant's application material.

what the @#$%?😕

Here's a wild guess.... maybe Tufts doesnt send personalized rejection letters to the 1500 or so people that wont get in this year.

A personalized rejection letter is not what I meant.
However, I think it would be nice for the 60 or so dollars that I paid them for "processing fee".
At least they could have 2 different letters. One for those whose stats are above the school average and the other one for those who don't have these stats.
I don't think that is a lot to ask. For all the money we pay for the processing, it would be nice to get a better explanaition for not recieving an interview.
I don't think that is alot to ask.

I think they don't have to make an excuse...they should just
say...we are sorry, we do not have a spot for you. Why waste
anybody's time and piss off candidates?

I think you have excellent GPA and DAT for most schools..
and you are also accepted at U 0f F which is cheaper.

Work hard, apply at Tufts for specialization, get in and tell them
you are rejecting them ...because they are no good by your standards. Also, this challenge will motivate you and with the
hard work, you will be an outstanding dentist!

All the best friend!

I got the same exact letter. Its obviously generic. I used mine to line my birdcage.

I think they do. They are giving advice to rejected applicants to give them a better shot at getting an interview. Obviously, they send it to everyone they reject, otherwise dentist2008 would have recieved a different letter.

Dentist2008, if you are really upset over this, which I dont think you are, just phone up the admissions office or email them about your complaint.

Right, and cheers to them for taking that initiative, but the idea that a school should be *required* to help rejected applicants improve their applications? No way.

Whats your point bill?

the point is bill is trying to pad his post numbers. 😱

If you want, you can call them up and ask them what's going on.
They will probably get mad at you, but at least they will give you a better explanation (quite possibly class is full).

Sorry to hear your bad news, man. You get accepted already, so who cares about Tufts.

Temple did the same thing to me last year. They said get 18 or better...I did

Said get a masters degree...I have an MBA with a 3.7

a few other things...but oh well 🙄

anyone else get the feeling dentaldream is a little sensitive about his schools crappy admission procedures?

Well...where can I begin with my dissapointment in Tufts...

All the time I called them to ask about the status of my application, they were just the rudest people! They had no manners at all, not to mention their lack of professional character! They invited me on an interview none of which were good days...they took for ever to respond to my application...and when I called to schedule an interview, I was just appalled by their bad-mannered demeanor!

If iI would have known this...I would have saved myself $60!

Sorry for those of you who had bad experiences with Tufts. It's very uncharacteristic of this school. As for the generic letter...most schools send out generic letters. It's ok, though. You guys will be where you're happiest (or at least should end up there if all works out the way it should).

Personally, the Tufts administration has been nothing but professional and helpful to me. Odd.

Either way, good luck in all your endeavors.

---------------
As an aside, UMDNJ told me to continue to improve my grades and I'd be accepted. Took some hardcore, upper level courses in the neuro, genetics, and mol bio/biochem fields...not to mention numerous other upper level econ, psychology, and various other science courses. Were they professional to me when I applied with my outstanding grades in all those courses? You can deduce that by where I am now.

I'm also extremely happy now.

That $60 is an investment. Hindsight is 20/20, and you can't make decisions based on that perspective.

dentist2008,

I suggest that you call Tufts and ask what hindered your accpetance. I am sure they will come up with something like: "oh, we look at the entire application and not only grades", which is crap to me!

I have lower grades than both you and Shawn and live in Mass.. havent received the letter yet. i guess my application wanst even worthy of their generic rejection etter.

You could live on Mars, and Tufts still wouldn't care. You have no advantage by living in Massachusetts.

I would have to agree with you there. The Tufts admin left a great impression with me. They were SOOO friendly, and they really seemed to be on top of the ball. Mark Gonthier gave a great presentation, and it really seems that the school cares a lot for its students....out of all the schools I went to, I really felt a family-type feeling between the admin and the students...and the students verified that to me. All and all, Tufts is an incredible school!

As for the OP, I would really call them and find out, because your stats are SOOOO much better than mine, and I got an interview...perhaps there was a mixup with another application, or they sent you the wrong letter.....they are human, after all! Tufts was sending me stuff to my wrong address, so when I was there for my interview, I checked to see what address they had recorded and it was the right one, so it was obviously a mixup with the mailing...

Ya, I wasnt sure if you were saying your Mass residency would help, I just mentioned it so there would be no misunderstanding.

No matter what your GPA or DAT, no one deserve or is guarantee anything admissions or in life. I really do not see why the original post even cares.

i sympathize with the op. let's face it, they dropped the ball on this. if a rejection letter is sent with a "reason" which is incorrect it just doesn't reflect well on the school. bottom line, if you have any interest whatsoever in attending school there, call and speak with the director of admissions, i'm sure he'd want to know that this is happening as it does look like carelessness on the part of the school.

True that!

Dude, who cares! If they rejected you screw'em. It was only Tufts, don't be so broken up about it.

You've been accepted into school.
Many others have not.
You won't convince any
why you're so distraught.

For the sake of those others,
your complaints please confine,
or else the forums will offer
some cheese with your "whine".

Indisputably, one of the most creative rebuttals I've heard in a long time.

This is in the most recent Newsweek...

Admissions: Bet You're Sorry Now
Newsweek Feb. 2 issue - page 9

As a high-school senior, former Treasury secretary Robert Rubin applied to Harvard (accepted) and Princeton (rejected). Four years later Rubin sent a letter to the Princeton admissions director: "You might be interested to know what happened to one of the people you rejected... I graduated from Harvard summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa." The dean's reply: "Every year, we at Princeton feel it is our duty to reject a certain number of highly qualified people so that Harvard can have some good students, too." Rubin, who told the story in his recent memoir, "In an Uncertain World," emphasized to NEWSWEEK that his note was "tongue-in-cheek"; he harbors, he says, no grudge against Princeton. But colleges say most of the "nyah-nyah" letters they receive?usually from students rejected years earlier?aren't so good-humored. The letters "range from still palpably quite angry to simply triumphant to a little silly," says Harvard admissions dean Marlyn McGrath Lewis, who receives a handful each year. "In the Ivies we're all used to it. I'm sure it happens at other colleges, too."

The letters could provide a lesson to today's applicants. Sally Rubenstone, author of "Panicked Parents' Guide to College Admissions" and a former Smith College admissions counselor, has suggested that "Today" cohost Katie Couric (who's said she's still bitter about being rejected by Smith) broadcast an "I Told You So" segment each April, in which famous people talk about the pain they felt when they got that thin envelope. "Anybody under 35 probably got rejected somewhere... because [admissions] has become such a crapshoot," Rubenstone says. It's heartening that some grow up to be Treasury secretary.

Cool article. Very funny.

UMKC School of Dentistry is quite nice to rejected students. They send their rejection letter with the advice for next year and the whole deal - sort of as recommendations for getting right back up for the next cycle.

But what's really cool:

A week later they send a rolled-up UMKC photo contest Calendar too.

Not personalized, and yet very nice of them. A little bit of thought on their part went a long way with me.

No ill-will here.

I also applied to Tufts with above average numbers. I ve already been accepted to two dental schools and would not go to Tufts even if I got in but i agree, they shouldn't send you nonsense letters. I haven't hard anything from them since I applied last juluy, but I am expecting the same letter you got.

I guess Tufts are looking for more than stats in an applicant's profile... maybe they didn't like where you went to college. Just kidding.

I am in the same shoes, applied 2nd day of the cycle (May 19th), since then... Nada!

My stats? GPA: 3.5, Sci 3.4... OChem19, GChem19, TS18, AA17, PAT17... by now you would think, I am over the cut-offs at Tufts... and my very early application deserves some attention... and every time I call the school, all I get is "Check Info-source" - very scriptive Bull!

I careless about what decisions they make about my file at this stage...

Clearly, Tufts = 👎 , in my experience.

Damn that sucks! I wanted to apply there after undergrad, and still will, but feel like if you guys didn't get in with good stats then its an uphill battle. I really wonder why the original poster didn't get in? I mean the stats are good so what the hell happened? I am starting to worry.

from what i heard tufts really cares about having a lot of experiance in the dental office before you apply + good stats will get you in...but there's always exceptions i guess 🙄

Yes that is poor indeed. Heck as much as they charge in the app process they could afford to hire someone for min wage that could write handwritten letters to all 2000
