What to bring to interview? Should I bring a cover letter?

I'm under the understanding that once you secure an interview, a cover letter is unnecessary. The primary purpose of the cover letter is to secure an interview, when submitted with a resume. Is this correct? Also, is there anything I should bring to the interview, aside from a CV, secured with a paper clip? Thanks!!
