I've shadowed a surgeon during his office hours. Under experiences, what would this be categorized as? I'm thinking Clinical office hours/ volunteer?

Sounds like clinic to me, unless you mean he has students that come in and ask for help during his office hours.

Were you doing secretary work, interacting with patients, or watching him interact with patients?

I was following him around and was in the presence when he was visiting patients in the rooms. I didn't do any secretary work, but I occasionally completed small errands for him.

On the most recent AMCAS I'd probably put it under "other". Shadowing is not volunteering.

👍

I think it is weird there isn't a selection for shadowing. You just put it as other and write "Shadowed Dr. X" as the name. That's what I did for all my shadowing hours and it is working out fine for me.

Okay. I have one more question pertaining to this shadowing experience. On my CV, I like my items listed like this: -Program/Department where experience took place -Place, city, state -Position So regarding this shadowing position with the surgeon, what would I state to be the department where this took place? Should I put "Private practice" because it is a private practice? So I would end up with: -Private practice -place, city, state -clinical observer I'm not too sure about the "Private Practice" part because it looks tacky, but I don't know what else to put.

You could call it "surgeon's clinic" or some such, as it was in his clinic/office. His practice is technically everything he does, including his operations, while his clinic is the physical location of his office. I wouldn't stress about it much though.

How about, "Office of Dr Joseph Gomez, MD, Surgeon?" Or you can give the formal name of his practice, eg, "Sacramento Surgical Associates."

what if it's a shared clinic among a handful of surgeons?
