I did my Master's in microbio at Illinois, which is also where I went for my undergrad B.S., same major. It was a research based Master's, so therefore, I was doing labwork and a few classes. Some programs have Master's that are only class-based.

I did a Mesters Program at BU, thorugh their med school, in medical sciences. I took many first year dent/med school classes like physio, histo, immuno, biochem. There is also a thesis requirement that you can do via research or library (review paper).

Does anyone know of pre-health professional programs (class based) in California? Does it matter where you do it? For instance, is cal state competitive enough for dental school acceptance?

Because you took so many first year dental classes did you still have to retake those classes or were you able to take classes with 2nd year students?
