I haven't applied yet, I'm planning to this cycle but I was wondering what you do after you've been rejected. I am trying to prepare for the worst case scenario. I know they tell you why they rejected you in most cases and what was wrong with your app. but you can only retake so many classes. So I was wondering what some of you do/have done in this situation. I don't care how many times I get rejected (hopefully none 😀) but if I do I need to get an idea of what I will need to do in my attempt at improvement.

personally, i had to come to a place where i accepted the possibility that i could be rejected...this was SO hard for me..so as i am applying for this cycle, in the back of my mind, i am taking baby steps in case i have to reapply...which include taking a couple of upper level science classes this fall... i will assess the situation come dec 1st and if need be...take some more classes in the spring...when i get my dat scores (soon), i can incorporate those in my plan...meaning if i don't get in, maybe i'll have to retake it....also planning on work in a dental office/ volunteering.
you can't get hung up on not getting accepted...do your best to get your acceptance and have a plan b( reapplying)
good luck

sit and cry and then get wasted.

Yes, this always works.

On a serious note, you can do the following to increase your chances:

1) retake courses to raise your GPA
2) retake the DAT for a better score
3) apply earlier
4) obtain a graduate degree
5) complete a post bac program

Anybody else care to add to the list?

which 1 looks impressive on the application? post bach program or masters? or does it even matter?

Yes i belive most of us face the possibility of rejection at least before we take the DAT. I mean you never know, you hope for the best but that is not something you can control. However, don`t get hung up. Just improve the area that brings you down. For example, if your DAT score was not high enough just retake it. Also ask about waiting lists, sometimes they may put you on there and you reapply next year and get in. It never hurts to ask.
Most important of all jut do your best. If you do your best then you have nothing to worry about. You`ll be fine.

Doesn't post-bac affect your undergrad GPA and a masters starts up a new GPA?

Something to consider.

what ????
what are you talking about ????
are you serious about this ????

right now Im doing an informal post-bacc (taking all the pre-dent classes needed like gen chem / orgos / and biology) but im not in a masters program. I am gearing to apply (for first time) for 2009 cycle, I am no where near ready for this cycle 🙁

Anyways, I am assuming (due to my poor 3.01 undergrad GPA), I most likly woun't get accepted the first time I apply (2009 cycle), but I was planning to enter into a masters program at oakland university (masters in biology), your saying that all my undergrad & postbacc GPA will go away and I will end up starting a freash new one ??? THATS SWEET !!!!

Im kinda happy about this now lol, but also confused as hell
Do the GPA restart happen to which gpa... ALL 4 of them ? or just the overall ? Science ? BCP ? non-science ?
**confused and happy**

You will still have your undergraduate GPA listed on your application, but you will then have a seperate section that states your seperate graduate GPA. Graduate school classes are not calculated into your undergrad GPA so you end up with two seperate sets of GPAs, one for undergrad and one for grad, and schools will look at both of these.

ah I see... thanks for clearing that
Im sure it still helps tho... right ?
they can actually see the drastic improvement between the undergrad work and the masters work

is it good to move to your first choice of shool after undergrad to do some coursework at the school in which u are interested in going? I am from Iowa but I think I have a better chance of getting into creighton so if i had to pick i would choose going to creighton. the question is do they like you banging down the door to get into that particular school?

i'm not gonna lie....i dont know how many of you have seen the movie 'rudy' where he trys and trys and trys some more to get into notre dame, but i am officially announcing myself the new rudy of dental school. i am getting in dammit!!!!!! no matter how many of those rejection letters i get

oh and about the sit and cry and get wasted....thats probably the very first thing i'll do...followed my picking myself up off of the floor and starting again

are you saying your only going to apply to 1 school ? or did I missunderestand you...

My honest opinion is, if you WANT dentistry, then it doesn't matter which school you earn your DMD / DDS from. If you WANT the school instead, then it really doesn't matter what major you go into lol... get what Im saying.

oh god no i plan on applying to a ton of schools...ill go to d-school on the moon if i have to...i was just askin about how things go if they decide to go somewhere else other than where they did their under-grad
