What to do before entering Pod?

Hey,
I just got accepted to DMU and waiting to hear from AZPOD. I was wondering if there was anything I could do until the fall semester to prepare for school. I am currently not in school and have all the time in the world to kill. I would appreciate any advice! 🙂

Everyone says to just chill, but I disagree. by no means am I saying to start full out studying for school. However, it may have been 2-3 yrs since your last A/P,or biochem class. I suggest casually reading through your notes/books and looking at various pics/diagrams from your old A.P class. Also, it is never too early to start memorizing metabolic pathways (ie glycolysis, gluconeogeneisis, etc.). Again, read lightly and casually as if you are reading a stephen king novel. Try to find things about anatomy (esp lower leg) that seem interesting. Sometimes, students are rushed through a 16 week class and fail to actaully find something interesting from the class. Here is your chance.Good luck!

What about organic chem? I don't recall much but kept my book strictly for this purpose. I also will be starting at DMU next year and am off work at 3 everyday. I thought I would review A&P and maybe the biochem pathways, but what should I review from my organic chem book? I'm sure the nomenclature would be useful for understanding generic drug names, but do we re-learn any mechanisms, stereochemistry, etc. in pod school? Anything else from any subjects? What about physcis?

Honestly, there is no need to ever look at your Organic Chemistry notes again...ever...forget you even took the class. You really don't even need it for Pharmacology...I agree with the above posts, just take it easy..once you start classes you are going to be lacking in free time

I agree,

Take every OC book, lab man, written note card, and burn them. Same for 90% under grad stuff. Casually read things like AP, histology, embryology, biochem, and neuroanatomy if you took it. The rest is compost. I would not seat micro stuff becasue it is a 2nd year class and most stuff learned now will be forgotten and micro is 90% memorization. A lot of people say physics is important to helping understand biomechanics, but I say burn your physics stuff too.

There is no way that your "casual reading" will come close to the volume you will experience in Podiatry School. It will be a drop in the bucket. Relax and focus on having fun.

Thank you for all the advice. I think I lean more toward janV88 and airbud. I feel like if I casually read through things that my mind won't retain it. But I guess, if I have absolutely nothing to do, it wouldn't hurt just to look at stuff. However, I would like to enjoy the freedom while I have it.

If you were to read any books, maybe some time management books or learn how to type on a keyboard correctly if you don't know how already. NO to the Ochem book reading! Why would anyone want to put themselves through that again. Get ready for Podiatry School, it's amazing!

Wait till you get to school and talk to several second and third years before going through the hassle of buying books. The only book that I'd seriously recommend (and this is only because I still need to buy one) is Netter's General anatomy atlas. It's worth it.

Other than that, most of the first year material comes right out of lecture. If you take good notes and are savvy with powerpoint, you'll be fine.

Travel. Seriously.

If you can afford it, do some traveling. Visit Europe. Spend some time just roaming and take in a new culture. Visit places you've always wanted to go. Even if its a car ride away.

The inside of that cubicle is stifling by 3 months into school. Get out there and enjoy yourself.

Yeah. I work right now in a freaking cubicle and cant wait for school to start so atleast that cubicle is in the library haha!

If you backpack through the right places in Europe and sleep in half way shady hostels it can be moderately cheap.

Croatia is a cool place... Russia is an experience.

Just kidding! I searched for and found out that "[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]Lectures from each class in all courses are automatically captured with simultaneous audio, visuals, and video. Furthermore, students can replay audio capture via Apreso Podcast on iPods and MP3 audio devices." Sweet!

I'd say the "Ridiculously Made Simple" books are great for casual reading. I take some of these books with me on trips, and read them sometimes on free time.
