What to do during year off?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your not gonna get into a good MBA school without some work experience. 3 years is enough to do a JD, but it's too late to apply this cycle. As for working, the only guys I know that pull 60+ out of undergrad are in business or engineering.

I have an idea. What if you contact your med school and ask if you can do your classes out of order for a joint degree. Usually people do 2-3 years then their MBA work, and then their 4th year. With three years you could probably swing the requirements for an MBA, MPH, M.S., etc. or maybe a combination.

Or you could just take your time in undergrad, enjoy it, and learn new things, rather than blow through it as fast as possible. Take classes you wouldn't otherwise take.

You should take off to a foreign country, learn a lot about the world, try new things, and maybe even learn another language. You can always make money after med school. Don't waste your time slaving for the man.

This guy wants a job out of college that will pay $60K/yr. That's great. What's gonna suck is when he realizes that after four years of negatvie income (medical school), which included two years of "working" for negative income (clinical rotations), he's stuck in a ball busting, sleep deprived 4-yr long job contract that will pay him $40-48K/yr.

Totally agree. College is the best thing ever! Now that I am just finishing MSIII, I constantly wish that I were back in undergrad. Don't let your aspirations ruin the best time of your life.

There is nothing wrong with working and making some money. However, if you really want your year off to be an experience of life and something that you would never regret missing out on than go travel, do some exciting extracurriculars, explore things that you know you wouldn't get a chance to do for another 8+ years. If you are bound w/ a 40 hours/week job you will be in the real world and will not get to do any of the things you wished you'd done just because you wanted to make a few extra $ for personal use. If you really need it just take a few thousand $ extra in your medschool loans but don't give up a free year for some lousy job.

I spent a year teaching English abroad. Forget making 60k, but its been a great year.

I still can enjoy my year off...travel, relax, ect.

No job that pays you 60K a year fresh out of college will give you enough time off to travel, relax, etc.

I met a guy fresh out of college working as a trader on Wall St. He was making bank, but hadn't missed a single HOUR of the market being open in over a year.

I second that; travelling is something that should be mandatory in the university curriculum. You learn so much outside of the academic environment.
