My current job will be ending around the end of January and I'm not really sure if I should attempt to find another job for the few months before matriculating. At the same time I would feel pretty lazy not working for like 5 months, but I do have plenty of hobbies to keep me busy. I do not financially need a job, as I have enough money saved to last until school starts.

However, I'd definitely take a job that I would enjoy like research or something clinically related, but they are few and far between around here, and being hired to work for a few months seems very unlikely to me. I've done food/retail work and other less desirable jobs and it's really not something I want to do again.

So I'm basically wondering if it seems totally ridiculous to not work for so long. I'm also curious if others are planning to take a bit of time off before school starts, and if so how long.

Unless you are gonna do something like traveling during this period, then go get a job. Med school is not cheap. Pick up all the nickles and dimes if you can.

I have been working since I was 14 years old. Started at fast food, then retail. Then finally in healthcare. I was accepted a few months ago and decided that instead of working 16 hour shifts on the weekends I would rather focus in school and life. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it and I know several people who are doing the same thing.

I'd encourage you to try to pick up some paid employment - why hemorrhage the the money you've saved over the next 6 months and then not have it in your back pocket for that transition back to a student budget?

I'm not sure if you're near any research-oriented universities but in my 7+ years of working in research with faculty members, a directed email to a researcher expressing interest in what they're doing can absolutely net you a short-term gig (as long as you're willing to do whatever task it is they need- data entry, consenting, whatever other outstanding needs they have). Can be a nice way to get a publication, close mentorship, and some extra research experience too!

I'm currently in my gap year, and I'm working. However, I'm also doing my best to travel! It's your last free year before medical school takes over your life. Try to balance it out!

Honestly just have fun, I have been accepted too, I just tutor from time to time (flexible), i work like 10-16 hours a week with flexible hours, and still make about 1000-2000/ month from that. I have been traveling a lot and just working out and spending time with the family.

Traveling, partying, clubbing, and having a good time!

........oh I forgot........ also looking for my trophy wife. Jk............. not really

I'm in the same boat as the OP and I was wondering if anyone had any job suggestions?

I'm having a hard time finding a good job that will only hire for a six month period and any suggestions or ideas would help!

Is there anything fun you want to do without risking a criminal record? Do it.

Work if you want to, but under no circumstance should you pre-study for M1 (in case that is a tempation)

Other activities I would do if I could go back include working, playing video games, traveling, and spending time with family

Hey O'Grady,

Saw that you were going to DMU which is my one of top choices if I end up going DO. How is second year? Is it harder than first or are you a beast at studying by this point?
