I'm planning on applying to OT schools next fall. In the mean time, I want to get a job...I am looking at pharm tech for now. The pay is okay and I can work on the weekends while going to school part time. I need help deciding if I should do pharm tech or work as an OT aide somewhere?? what do u think I should do?

What's your background?

I'm switching careers and have one masters already. I was working in a professional position in the field of my masters, but quit to take prereqs for OT programs, and volunteer. I'm now in the position of being a couple months away from finishing my prereqs, and needing a job for the next year or 15 months, while I apply to programs and wait for them to start. Rather than try to work in my old field, I'm looking at various residential counselor and direct care provider-type positions... positions which only require a bachelors degree in psychology, which I have. They're hourly, but I figure it's decent experience for an OT to have. They seem to be plentiful in my area... I think people get burned out easily. It seems like a decent job for a year, since I'm married and can use my husband's benefits.

I thought both pharmacy techs and OT aides needed special training? Are you already trained as an OT aide or something?

OT aide does not need training. Certified OT Assistants do. As far as pharm techs, all you have to do is pay about 100 bucks and take a test. Of course buy the study guide books as well...

I think I might do Pharm Tech since the pay in decent and I can work part time while in school.

Oh, I did not make the distinction between a COTA and OT aide. And my brother, who has a masters degree, is currently dating some girl with only a high school diploma, who my mother has assured me "is in school to become a pharmacy tech" so that's why I assumed there was more to it!
