I'm in a bit of a quandary.
Some background:
I'm a sophomore with a sub-par GPA.
I'm in an honors program where I'll learn about research tools/skills and have a mini project and internship in my particular field of study (non-science).
I was looking at my transcript and realized that I've been averaging 12-14 graded hours per semester. Some of my hours during sophomore year were in research credit. Dumb decision by me.
I want(ed) to complete an honors thesis, which would allow me to register for 3 hours, which are graded but aren't as part of an actual course. I still haven't started my program, and have no idea what I'm doing as of now. But, I feel like an honors thesis would look good on my resume.
However, without an honors thesis I will still have pretty good research experience through my program.
The other route I am considering is to take an English course that allows students to become a peer tutor for writing. I love writing and I really enjoy tutoring. This would be a more fulfilling experience at a personal level.
So, since I have slacked on course credit hours and probably need an English class for medical school, I'm thinking of doing that and ditching the honors thesis altogether, for now at least. I can still do it senior year but it won't be able to land a spot on my AMCAS app.
Is doing an honors thesis prematurely worthwhile just to write it down? Does it even carry that much weight, considering I have other research experience (albeit with no publications or anything like that). Would it be better for me to go through the tutoring route? I want to fulfill my passions but I'm corrupted by my desire to look like a better suited med school candidate. What to do?
Sorry if this post is a bit erratic. I was pretty much thinking out loud. Thanks SDNers for your insight, as always.
