Rising third year here. So at this point, as I'm working on a project in my chemistry lab in the summer, I'm starting to realize that there is a lot more work to be done on it than expected, and there may be so much work that I won't be able to get anything tangible (i.e. a poster, presentation, etc.) unless I work on it for 7 more months - 1 year. I have applied for a grant for the fall and would like to, of course, stay in the lab if I receive it, but would I be better served by seeking an REU next summer to try and earn something tangible? Or should I just keep trying to get this project I'm doing to work. Either way, I feel like I'm in a bad situation with research, but I still want to know what the best move is.

edit: also, I've been in this lab since the end of last summer, and have been on this project for 3 months. My mentor is a great guy, but he wanted me doing 3 months of work for his own project for a while before we finally agreed to push forward on the one I'm mostly independent on right now. I realize that research takes time, but I'm anticipating this taking too much time to even get a poster out of (which, I believe, is a bad thing because med schools want to see demonstrated research productivity iirc)
