(copied from reddit) Hey guys,

So I wanted to follow up on a previous thread I started, which discussed some obstacles and hardships I faced as an undergrad, which included losing my mom to cancer over the course of 2 years. In short, this left me broken mentally, physically, and a scar on my academic career.

My GPA was significantly impacted and it decreased incredibly through those years, however, the past 3 semesters with over 54 credits taken, I've been over a 3.8.
My problem is that even through all of this, my cumulative is a 3.085, and my science is a 2.72.

The premed courses I have a C- or below are: General chemistry II (C-), Organic chemistry i (D), Organic chemistry ii (D+), and Biochemistry (D+). These courses I took whilst having a full time job and taking care of my mother months before she passed away. I know there are no excuses, but my recent improvements, I believe, show that I am a different student than I was when I was taking those courses.

I'll post some graphs and charts using the AAMC GPA Calculator to illustrate my point.
Freshmen cGPA: 2.79 (31 hrs)
Freshmen sGPA: 1.79 (12 hrs)
Sophomore cGPA: 2.60 (23 hrs)
Sophomore sGPA: 2.07 (11 hrs)
Junior cGPA: 2.82 (31 hrs)
Junior sGPA: 2.34 (19 hrs)
Senior cGPA: 3.92 (34 hrs)
Senior sGPA: 3.87 (22 hrs)

Overall cGPA: 3.087
Overall sGPA: 2.72

My question is what should I do next, I have to retake the MCAT because my score is imbalanced and I plan on taking the classes that I've done horribly in. Any advice is welcomed, thank you again guys!

You will have to retake these courses. Medical schools require a "C" or higher in these courses.

You may want to do an SMP in addition to retaking those courses, and then you will also have to do well on the MCAT.

Agree with others. Retake prereqs, take and crush mcat, +/- smp depending on your future gpa and if you have an MD preference.
