Hi,🙂 I completed 4 yrs of college. With few pre reqs of pre-med. Out of skl now. Have huge family issues, problem with funding my education Want to go to a CC and finish up my remaining pre-reqs and study for mcats. I was in a CC registgerd for a course last semester, but due to some payment issue i had to drop and wasted a semester. Now I wish to go back again in spring.Even though had a crapy GPA I still want to give it a shot by having other pre-reqs. Want to improve in my classes that I will take and hopefuly make up for it somwer. I am 24 now. And want to either go for P.A, D.O or M.D. As I am a non-trad, I keep losing the hope of how will I make it coz, first I really want to be a doctor, in the health field. All my college yrs and even now, i alwys prefered workin in a health-care environemnt rather than somwer else. I jsut dont imagine myself workin in any other field. But all the problems in my life are just causing more and more hurdles for me. When I come here and read all your guys comments and experience I feel better and motivated as I see there are so many ppl out there tryin to get there, and once again I start to move on. But I still have to take, chem 2, phy 2, orgo 1 and 2 and a calculus. Plus MCATS. I have planned a year to do this including summer. And then apply. Please suggest what should be my first step because I am having trouble to fund my education, and I am just thinking if this is going to work for me or not. This is really frustrating period of my life, I want to do so much and I am not being able to move at all, I realli dono how to keep up with this 😕

It's hard to make up for a crappy GPA as they don't budge much once you've taken a lot of classes. It also sounds like you're having some financial troubles right now, and I'm sorry to hear that.

So, the main question is, can you get A's? If you can't get straight A's from here on out, you're probably out of luck if you have a bad GPA already. B's just won't cut it. Second, what's your BA in and do you expect to be in financial troubles for awhile? Stringing out classes (picking up some here, dropping others there) for 3 to 4 years will make it much harder to do well on the MCAT.

As a final note, have you thought about being a nurse for awhile? You could get an RN in a much smaller amount of time from a community college. Nurses are paid well, in demand, and have pretty flexible schedules. You could build some financial stability, pay off some debts, and then start taking classes at a regular pace. You're only 24, and life is a marathon, not a spring, so I wouldn't worry about the extra 4-5 years this might take. I'm 28 and just starting med school next fall.

I think your first step should be to resolve your family and financial issues. It's very difficult to focus on academics when your life is in crisis mode.

Find a way to pile up money and pay cash for classes. There is little aid available for part time, non-degree seeking students. 24 is young. Taking a year to put yourself in a better place emotionally and financially will be a year well spent.

I agree with this. I went back when I was 23 with no money and plenty of family turmoil, and although I did relatively well, I feel that I could have done better and finished with less debt. My advice is to take a year off to work and volunteer in a healthcare field, save up some money for tuition, and address your family problems.

Don't let the family hold you up any longer than that, though. And don't do it if you're afraid you won't be able to get A's.
