What can I do to study for USMLE over summer after MSI?

These are my courses that I will have completed by the end of the year:
1. Anatomy
2. Neuroscience/Neuroanatomy
3. Molecular Medicine/Biochemistry
4. Physiology
5. Behavioral Medicine
6. Ethics
7. Imaging for Anatomy

any advice? get Qbank for 3 months? get Underground Clinical Vignettes in subjects? liten to Goljan (to preview pathology next year?) do pharm cards?

9/10 people on SDN are going to tell you not to study and for the most part I agree. I did the same thing as you when I finished my first year(Got on SDN and asked about summer studying). The truth is that it wont make much difference since you usually forget stuff by the time you hit boards. But I will tell you that if you did decide to study then learn Physiology. B/c Physio has strong ties into alot of other subjects on the boards(pharm, biochem, anatomy and most of all Path). Everything else is either too low yield or you probably havnt had it yet. I would use BRS or the bigger costanzo book.

also, If you know you want to do a competitive specialty they try to do some research. Im thinking about Derm as a 3rd year and really wish I had done some already.

I agree completely. The return on time invested in research will be orders of magnitude greater than that invested in board prep.

I will say however that listening to Goljan on long drives or while working out or something is not a bad idea. If you hear some of his mnemonics a few times over, they will stick, and it requires virtually no effort on your part.

Bump.

I'll be doing research over the summer (just finishing MSI) but I'm wondering what kind of STEP I stuff I should consider doing (I know people recommend not doing anything, but I'm pretty interested in trying to be proactive here).

If you're absolutely dead-set in doing any academic work outside of research your summer after M1 year, look over Physiology. It'll come in handy a lot for path and pharm, and it'll get you into the pathophysiology mindset you'll need for Step I and clinical years.

Generate an elaborate scheme to study everything in year 1 and do research as well, study for a few hours, say screw it, grab a beer and hit the golf course, gym, etc. This is what I did...worked out just fine.

You should just figure out what books you want to get and acquire those at cheap prices this summer after most ppl have taken the boards, or find an upper classmen and get them (maybe they even have notes from future classes in them).

If you're inclined, you should also do clin or benchtop research.

My school uses the "new" organ system cirriculum. I will have completed

1. basics 1 (overview of all traditional 1st year subjects)
2. basics 2 (overview of all traditional 2nd year subjects)
3. cardiovascular
4. GI
5. Pulmonary
6. Musculoskeletal

Each organ system is covered in anatomy, embryology, physiology, pathology, pharm, etc. But i feel like i don't remember crap, granted i wasnt studying as hard as I should have been, so I want to do something this summer to help for boards. Next year we will be doing Renal, neuro, endocrine, repro. Should i just look over BRS or something else too?

Throw all of that out of your sight...have some fun, hang out with your family and more importantly treat yourself for surviving a year of med school. Trust me when you get to the end of the road..you will see all the things you should or could have done. None of the stuff you learn will stick or prove beneficial as you transition to 2nd year. In second year, everything you learn is imp and mostly high yield on boards..thats when you start putting things together. If you waste your time studying during the only summer vacation you will prolly ever truly have then get ready for a long list of regrets.

I would go with listening to goljan. you arent going to understand it at all but at least you can feel better you did. get rr path to and FA and read it before you study your school lectures
