okay well i am a non trad w/ aspirations to go to med school. I had a horrible UG gpa a longtime ago, and since then completed my SMP..and did relatively well. I feel like i have strong letter of rec cos most of my recommenders where suprised by my upward trend and promised to write me a strong letter!!!

Well it seems like all this may not be enough, with no interviews or acceptances.. i seriously have to face the plan B ..which really i dont have a concrete idea of... What are some alternate careers that i can pursue, granted i 'll probably be miserable..but i'll rather be miserable and financially stable. I know i am really interested in international work in the health care sector..... but dats about it... n e one in the same boat..wat did u do or how r u handling it? It is sooo hard to stay positive in this state especially when all kinds of clocks are ticking and it seems i am just wasting my time and have nothing to show for it except for that overpriced SMP dat cant even get me into med school...or a job!!!!!

aaah i guess i just needed to vent! Phew!

Did you apply to both DO and MD programs?

i only applied to MD schools...DO has it limitations since i dont plan on being in this country forever..kinda worried DO is not internationally accepted.. i maybe wrong but..

Could you give us a bit more details about your stats? And the interview season isn't over yet.

Yes, like the GPA for the SMP, MCAT score, and undergrad GPA and BCPM. And what are your ECs? When were you complete at your schools?

Agree not enough info posted to help this person.
Also, there are many careers where you could do international work. You could go for PA school, become an RN, or do a MPH degree or maybe even MHA (not sure about the latter helping w/international work, though). I also think it is incorrect that DO's can work internationally. Keep in mind that most international jobs don't pay much, and if you have to pay for med school with loans, you may not be able to afford to take a job internationally.

Here is a link to a map with the international rights.

When you talk about international practice though do you mean working for an organization like Doctors without Borders or moving to another country and practicing? If you mean medical missions or dr w/o borders then you have the same rights as an MD...it's only if you plan on moving to another country.

It seems like you could be interested in public health since you are interested in international work and healthcare; however, I would talk to your advisor/program director at your SMP further on your chances. I mean most likely you have spent a lot of money on this process. Share some of your stats with us and we can give you a better idea.

Good luck!

thank u all for ur comments and resources.. my stats UG 2.80 , smp 3.62, MCAT 26 and have decent EC which include shadowing, international work(community development), counseling...

As far as international work goes .. i may have to practice overseas there depending on how things go..but i am also very interested in medical mission and trips also..

thanks..

Thanks for sharing your stats with us. I would take the MCAT again. A 26 is prety low for MD schools and it is something that can easily be improved.

Has anyone at your SMP given you advice on what to do? What are their impressions? Did you not even get an interview at that school?
