When a tooth breaks off what is supposed to be done with the part that stays in. should it be taken off, or will it fall on its own.
Does it depned on the age of the person. For example what would be done in the case of a 5 year old.

When a tooth crown breaks off on an adult person, whats left is called a "root tip" and it should be extracted to prevent infection, sometimes they are left (if root canaled) as good space maintainers until perminant restoration is placed. Sometimes root tips do super erupt but they will not fall out on their own in an adult person.
In case of children with primary teeth, the roots will resorb by the erupting perminant tooth under it. If the primary tooth falls out too early in case of molars, then a space maintainer device should be fabricated to prevent shifts, and prevention of perminant tooth eruptions.
